Steve's Story

Life I rejoined the site to get people interested in our 40 year reunion. I was on the planning committee and we were able to pull off one of the best party weekends of all time. A grand time was had by all and we were shocked at how connected we all were. We3 truly had an amazing group of people in our class and it was an honor to be a part of this event. There will be another party in 2015 to celbrate 60 for those of us who make it. I have to wonder where all the years have gone. Time has picked up a a head of steam and the clock appears to be moving at a more rapid pace. I join this site every couple of years to see who has signed my guest book and I even had a couple of messages. I have been a member of this since 2002 and since 2008 my classmates have been making contact with more frequency. encourage everyone to get a facebook site as well since it is still free. I am just amazed at how our beaches have disappeared. Did anyone think to take any pictures? That would certainly be something that I would like to see. You can see the Daytona 500 being run on the beach at the Speedway. Crossroads, at high tide, had at least 100 yards between the ocean and the road..on the west side of the 3 lane road were those big dunes that dune buggies used to play in. Now the water is up to several houses on A1A. We watch our beaches erode away and disappear as the ocean level seems to be rising. It seems a no-brainer to most of us we need to stick a straw in the ocean, desalinate, and use that water. We have been living in Saint Augustine beach the past 16 years and we sure picked a great place. Luckily we bought at a good time and bought something that we could afford. Living at the beach allowed us the luxury of being within walking distance of the Atlantic ocean. There are no more relaxing sports than Riding a bike on the beach. I still surf and it sure helps when you are close to home. I have been married now for 28 years to my loving wife Betsy. We have chosen not to reproduce but we do have a few pets that act like kids. Currently we have two dogs and a cat. Its funny but my hobbies have remained fairly stable my whole life. I enjoy music, reading, tennis, surfing, walking, bike-riding, movies, stocks, and much more. It is hard to fit everything that I like to do into my schedule. The wife and I will typically go out on the town at least Friday or Saturday night. We are both avid triva players. I say night but we are usually home by 10. I get up at 4 in the morning out of habit and for me to stay out later I have to take a power nap. I still enjoy listening to bands at night and it is better for me when they start early. We go to a lot of concerts at the Amphitheater here. Just saw Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon rangers. They were very entertaining and I don't even listen to Blue Grass. I like rock and some of there great concerts we have seen in the past few years would include: Ringo and his all star band, Steely Dan, Jethro Tull, Lynrd Skynryd, Yes, John Fogerty, James Taylor, Crosby, Stills, Nash, etc. We need to travel more but go on a week vacation each year. This year I am planning on going to Yellowstone in the fall. Hiking in the mountains has been a fun thing for us to do while exploring the Carolina s & North Georgia. It really gets harder to stay fit as we age. Fighting gravity and birthdays is not for the weak at heart. I have a sedentary job and that makes it a little more difficult. I never was a world-class-athlete but I am fairly flexible for an old guy. The wife has an easier time maintaining her weight than me and Dr. Atkins is one of my heroes. I have to go on the low-carb thing at least half a year now. Combined with portion control and I can lose some weight. I should do it religiously but I like to eat, drink, and be merry. I have been writing songs my whole life and began to document them in 2001. I have recorded over 100 songs, copyright protected them, and will release our 4th CD early next year. I have selected a band of great musicians to back me up and we have been togetehr since 2007. I have also written a book which should be released by Thanksgiving. these are just a few of the things that I do for fun and entertainment. Some more of my favorite people and inspirations would include: Paul McCartney, Paul Allen, Chuck Norris, Eddie Van Halen, John Lennon, Jack Lalaine, Ben Franklin, Leonardo Da Vinci, Nikola Tesla, Gerry Lopez, Steve Jobs, and Linus Pauling, There are way to many to mention. I have read books and seen biographies on all of those people. Each have had a direct influence on the choices that I made and the path that I followed. School As I look back at my high school years I regret that I was not a little more outgoing and sociable. I was mostly shy, withdrawn, and aloof. I was insecure and and should have worn my glasses so that I could see what was going on. Don't know how I passed? It must have been easy material? Did I get by with a little help from my friends? I never even studied unless I had to make an oral presentation. Nervous and unprepared I never wanted to appear more foolish than I actually was. I am very lucky we had some understanding classmates and we did have some fun with the material. I didn't like being held prisoner in those walls and wanted to get out as soon as possible. I skipped as often as I could to still pass and even considered dropping out to work full time. Then in 11th grade, in history class of all things, Steve Robbins got me motivated to learn. He was a very good teacher that taught us to seek the truth. I even took his class in evolution in the 12th grade. The highlight: We went to go to the zoo on a field trip. I had my happiest times back then at the beach. I used to spend all day surfing and never get tired or burnt. Didn't even need sun screen back then. The women were even using some home brew intensifiers. We were very lucky to be able to drive on the beach and what would we have done without the driven-in movies? I don't have many pictures of those years and wish I would have taken many more of the scenery. We could drive on the beach from Croosroads to Vilano, in a Toyota Corona, and if we felt like it pull over and camp for the week. Blow-hole, on the south of Vilano Inlet, was the largest surf in the area. Our surf group wo...Expand for more
uld often camp out just south of Crossroads for the night or weekend. I also got a lot of enjoyment playing rock music and still stay in touch with some of my old band mates. We could have been contenders but liked to party too much. We partied like rock stars even though we were not. This is another thing that I don't have many pictures of. My guitar still brings me a lot of pleasure. That is something you can do for a lifetime and still be learning everyday. I always wanted to be a musician, my family and friends supported it, but as it turns out it did not pay the bills for the lifestyle that I desired. Musicians never got a pay raise and we actually made more money playing in bars in the 70s that we could make now. Heck my apartment rent in the late 70s was $200 a month. $100 a night would put a big dent in that important monthly bill. I always wanted to be a musician when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good one idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. Local musicians actually took a pay cut from the 70s to the 21st century. We did see a few success stories come out of the group. My parents allowed me to have a blowout graduation party at their house. I should take this chance to thank everyone for coming and not trashing my parents house too bad. I had no idea so many of you would be there. I was stunned at how much beer and booze was consumed. I really didn't mean to be a bad influence, it was other folks that supplied the alcohol. I had a band play there named the Ball Brothers and one of there members went on to join Molly Hatchet. By-the-way the police showed up and I was able to convince them we were under control and no one went to jail. Things were different back then but we sure were not thinking about harming anyone. Just a bunch of peace-loving partiers having some good clean fun. I can think of quite few big party's and concerts that I attended that made mine tame by comparison. College I went from high school right into the University of Florida. I should have taken a little time off. Oh I managed to pass two terms of classes thanks to my youthful energy and lots of long days. I was mostly interested in partying and those types of non-productive things. I had a good time.. I think.. I don't remember much of it..That Halloween party was legendary. Oh, streaking too. I can also remember the bike paths throughout the city. You could take a ride in any direction out of the city and see some beautiful farmland. We need that in every city. I took a year off from school after that. I worked, saved some money, and a group of 5 friends and I went to the Bahamas for 2 months. We were savages and camped out and roughed it. Once again, I don't have pictures of the event. That was the fittest I ever was. Running around scantly clad and often naked. We would stay in the water all day either surfing or spear fishing. We would swim for 8 straight hours. No fear of sharks or drowning, we were bullet proof. At night there was no distractions and we had a lot of time to think. I sorted through the priorities of life and made some goals. As we ran out of food and money I put them right under health and love on my list of needs. Bug-spray, air-conditioning, and a comfortable bed were also on that list. I went to F.C.C.J. to finish my A.A. I realized that I didn't even know what to major in and quit school for awhile. I worked apt. maintenance in the day and played music with the Vance Quimby Band at night. I decided in 79 that I wanted to take a technical Industrial Electronics program at downtown F.C.C.J. I quit the band New Years Eve 1979, took out a student loan, and went to school 6 hours a day for a year. I received a A.A.S., cut my hair, and got a decent job within 2 weeks. In 1994 after 7 years and 26 classses attended at night, I got a Bachelor of Technology degree from UNF. I only took a class a term, maintained a 3.3. GPA and had my weekends free. The company I work for covered the whole cost if you got a B or better and that kept me motivated. The rate at JU is now $700/per credit hour and if you go full time the cost would be like 30k per year.. The kids are coming out of school deep it debt due to the student loans. Workplace I always liked working with my hands. I took a lot of ribbing about working at the retirement home for so long. I was employed their off and on for 8 years. There was certainly a lot of knowledge and wisdom avaliable there and I had bankers hours. The people there often were lonley and felt forgotten by the families that they loved so much. As they reflected on there life they often mentioned to me things that they regretted not having done. By-the-way working a few extra hours was not on anyones list that talked to me. I finished technical training in August 1980. My last year their was 1979 and my first year of the job that I have now was in 1980. Yes, I have managed to stay employed at the same company for 29 years. In 25 more I may be able to afford to retire.. I don't think that I ever could because retirement seems like such a dirty word. I have to continue to be productive as long as my mind and body are able. Right now I feel like I could go 50 more years but it has always been a day-to-day thing. I would like to change careers and be a musician again but playing in bars will not pay our bills. I have written a lot of songs and maybe one day my ship will come in. Even if it never makes me any more money it would still be my favorite hobby. A lot of people now are finding that they quit working too soon. They say there is no inflation but we know that the rising costs are present and it is painful. This is the worst that the economy has looked and it comes at a time that we are contemplating working less. People are losing there homes at record rates, banks are going bankrupt, and no one has created a plan to steer through the dilema. As in a hurricane we have to hunker down and try to ride this one out. It seemes to be getting uglier as we head in to 2009. It is so sad that we are being robbed by such crooked and greedy executives.. It sure isn't the peaceful 70s any more and people just are not as neighborly. Corruption is present and spread throughout our government and corporations. You can trust the government just ask any Indian. I have some Seminole Indian in my blood as well.

Time flies when you are having fun. It really does enhance performance when you are enjoying what you're doing. Greed does make this "why" go fuzzy.
Runs a close 3rd to Physical and Mental Health.. Fridays historically fun.. Mondays sometimes had to dig deep for an Attitude adjustment. Never want to appear mean like a snapping turtle unless under attack.
Got to keep on smiling 😃 on A glorious summer day.. Trying to be in a safe spot when the afternoon thunderstorm appears. Early preparation sure helps as it does in most things
You will become sheepish and weak. Adjust your set or they control your thoughts and actions
Have time to prioritize my thoughts and could use a secretary. Lol 😉
Crossroads(Micklers Landing) in the 70s is where a group of local people unplugged and built our immune systems. We did it the old-fashioned way through exercise, grounding, vitamin D, UV rays, salt water, and forgetting ab

It does not have as much relevance when you are retired and don't need to network to find a job. It is still a plus to know someone to call for expert advice. or to have good friends .
Needs to be a little chillier but my bags are packed..
