Steven's Story
Life (updated Aug 2025)
After high school I went to UCLA for one year. It was a disaster, and it was the only year I went to college full-time. I went to college part-time for many years after that, and I now have 3 2-year degrees.
After UCLA I got a job as a draftsman for an electronics company. My current position as a Project Manager/Senior Designer in the electronics industry is a direct progression from that first job.
I have always liked my occupation, but in 1980 I decided I was too young to be content for a regular 9-5 life, so I joined the Air Force. That decision has allowed me to live in and visit many areas of the country and world I would not otherwise have been to. I have been to Europe 6 times, including almost 6 months in Germany during Desert Storm, 3 months in Turkey in 2006 and 6 months in Turkey again in 2011, and the Far East twice. I retired from the Air Force Reserve in Dec 2012.
In the late 70's I took up motorcycle riding. I rode my Honda 750 up and down the California coast and through the Rocky Mountains. I also rode from Denver to Florida after I joined the Air Force. I had hoped to ride to the Atlantic Ocean, so I could say I rode coast-to-coast, but I got hit by a car first. The bike was totaled, but I was not left with any long-term injuries. I gave up motorcycles when our first child was born.
I met my wife, Corinna, while we were both in our Air Force training in Denver. We were engaged less than a month after our first date. We celebrated our 43rd anniversary this year. She retired from the Air Force Reserve in 2003. We have 3 children: Christopher, Morgan, and Mary Kate. We have 4 grandchildren. We have lived in Florida, California, and for the last 36 years Ohio has been our home.
My younger brother, Bob (Class of 76), was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was about 8 years old. We grew up with the understanding that he probably wouldn't live to see his 30th birthday. By early 1983 he was on full dialysis twic...Expand for more
e a week to deal with his kidney failure. In August 1983, I donated a kidney to him. We were told it might extend his life about 5 years. It gave him optimism to marry his high school sweetheart, Roselin Moreta, in 1985. They had 2 children. He worked as a burn ward nurse at Torrance Memorial for close to 20 years. He even served as technical advisor for an episode of ER that told the story of a fireman with severe burns. He was on screen in the background twice during the episode. He also volunteered his time to serve as a counselor for a camp designed for children that had survived severe burns. His diabetes finally caught up to him, and he died in June 2001 at the age of 43. He got 17 years with my kidney. Several hundred people attended his memorial service. His was a life well lived.
In 2007 as part of my 50th year we vacationed in New England. That allowed me to visit the last 3 states I had not yet been to, so now I can say I have been in all 50 states. We have enjoyed taking driving vacations around the country exploring new and interesting sites, but in 2017 we took our first cross-country Amtrak ride through 17 states, so now train travel is our preferred way to go. The last few years we've enjoyed taking our tandem bicycle on multi-day bicycle tours. We expect to do more traveling by train and bicycle in the coming years.
I was Director of the local soccer league for many years. Now that all my children have grown up I no longer coach or referee soccer, but I still play goalie on a coed team every week. I still have fun, but I'm sure age will catch up to me soon. My children and I were actively involved in the YMCA's parent-child programs for years where we made many lasting memories.
I'm semi-retired now. I was laid off in 2023 when the company I'd worked for almost 34 years closed its doors. I started my own company to continue to support some of the customers I had at my previous job. So far, so good with that. All in all, Life is Good.
