Steve's Story

We all know the popular line from Forrest Gump -"Life is like a box of chocolates ... you never know what you're gonna get." Looking back, I think poker game might be the better metaphor. Some hands we had to fold, but most we played to the end and we're better for it. We were and still are a special breed. After High School: Munich was a blast that first semester (1964). So much so, I was told to sit out the second (academic suspension). I returned to Munich in '65 and managed to hang on into early '66. In March of that year, my father suffered a fatal heart attack and my family returned to the states for his burial. From late 1966 to early 1968, I divided my time either working, bumming around or taking some more college courses (e.g., U. of Maryland, College Park). Except for the cross-county road trips, much of this time was wasted. I was a lost shoe without my dad - I had no direction. In the fall of 1968, I applied and was admitted to the U. of Alabama (Birmingham Campus, UAB). I soon found comfort and a purpose in this place. It was much like Munich - without the beer. The whole school was contained in one building on the outer edge of the University of Alabama Medical Center. Large classes had 30-35 students - most had less than 20. With the friendship and guidance of one professor (Thomas St.Pierre, Ph.D.), I received my B.S. degree (chemistry) in 1970. Later, I added M.S. (chemistry) and Ph.D. (biochemistry) to the resume. 1968 is also the year I met my future and current wife of 39 years - LaJuana (Holtzclaw). She caught my eye on the first day of a physics class. Being in a small group, it wasn't long before we engaged in conversations outside the realm of physics. Amazingly, we soon discovered that we were both military brats (Air Force) and had even lived on the same street in Wiesbaden (missed each other by a month). LaJuana left Wiesbaden in 1963 when her father was transferred to Athens, Greece (Class of 1965). Then to California (Vandenberg A.F.B.) in 1966, where her father retired. LaJuana came to UAB only because it offered a degree program in physical therapy. What are the chances of this? It had to have been written down somewhere. Looking back, life has been good to us. mes, but we made it. Along the way, we were blessed with 5 kids (2 girls - 3 boys) and now have 8 grandchildren ( 6 girls - 2 boys). I left my work in medical research to start my own company in 1990 and LaJuana retired in 2004 (physical therapist, 33 yrs. with Children's Rehabilitation Service). She really enjoys the extra time with the kids now (ours, but mostly theirs) and I spend most of my time in the basement either tinkering with the MG's, woodworking or in my lab (contract work). If there's anyone out there who remembers (me or LaJuana), drop a note(sbakf at bellsouth dot net) and say - Hello. UPDATE 1/4/2010: We purchased a long held dream - 40 acres in the country. After all the trials and tribulations, it was was time for me and the misses to (perhaps) have some fun and relaxation. I want to develop the land - picturesque: green pastures and endless 3-rail white fencing, big front porch with attached house sitting on a hill, a large divided barn-style shop for the service and restoration of British sports cars and space to work a little wood. Might also throw in a shooting range. Wife just wants some walking trails, pond (or 2) and perhaps some chickens and a garden. The grand-kids and our 5 big dogs just want a place to run free. UPDATE 3/19/2011: Progress on the farm has been slow, but we're still moving forward. Neglected pastures (about 20 acres overgrown with high brush and briers) have been reclaimed and we've cut about 2 miles of walking trails. Hope to start construction on barn/shop before June - new home will probably come next year. No rush on the latter - refurbished/updated existing home on property. Although it's circa 1915, it has charm and serves our current needs well. Fun and relaxation - can't relax, too much work to do. Fun? - perhaps pleasure is the better word. There's something truly special in working the land. It's tangible and often beautiful to behold. I take two walks every day - one at daybreak and the other shortly before sunset with my wife and pack of five. These walks are not for the exercise, they're more of a time to assess - the fruits of our labor and the natural gifts (from God) we so often miss in our hurried lives. Life is good - only wish for another 40.
