Steve's Story
Hi Everyone , My life has had many ups and downs . My Mother and Dad moved to eastern KY in 1972 . It was a major change from Warren, MI . My Dad and Uncle got in the mining business , I worked around the mines since I was 15 . I graduated high school from Betsy Layne High School early because of my credits from Mich. I also graduated as a Daddy with a Baby Girl and a wife at 17 . Yes it was a real Shotgun Wedding . I went to a Voc-Tech School and worked in the mines on the evening shift . I became a electrician . I went to a Big Shaft mine in 1977. I guess I wanted to make it on my own, without my Dad and Uncle . They put me to bossing in 1978. I couldn't boss my way out of a paper bag. But some older guys that worked for me showed me the ropes. In 1979 ,One of the older guys told me to come to his section and he would try to help me. First thing he said, You see that watch you are wearing , you would be, a lot better fellow if you got rid of it. You time everything and if someone doesn't get something done in your time frame ,you start getting excited. I haven't worn a watch since then. It is either daytime or nighttime and you can't tell the difference underground. I had a son in 1980. I went thru a divorce in 1989. I ended up with my Kids . I remarried in1990 ,that lasted until 2011 . Cathy Maynard and I found each other on this web-site, after 40 years, She was my first kiss and my first love . She was down in South Carolina . We e-mailed each other for 6 months, I finally asked her out to have dinner , We met in Ashville, NC. We Dated for 31/2 years, I guess she wanted to make sure I wasn't a Ax Murder . We married last June at our Lake house in TN . We are happy as we could ever be. I ended up working 35 years in the mines in KY,W.VA, and Va. All of my time was in Management since 21 years old . I ended up being the Maint .Supt. for 6 years at the big mine. I was General Manager of a company that had mines in all three states. I stayed on the the road more than underground. I was there for 15 years . I don't miss that . I worked as a mine supt. at Tampa Electric Company . I loved that . Most of the employees had ...Expand for more
worked for me before. I had 60 employees . It was very, very nice. But all good things must come to a end. A rock fell on me, After 35 years without a lost time accident. It messed my neck up . They flew me to Kingport,TN , I couldn't feel or move anything from the neck down. They said it bruised my Spinal cord . I stayed in hospital until the swelling went down . But later on, they did a surgery on my neck .They put a plate and six screws and a couple of cadaver bones in . I told them to put a good fisherman's bones in but I don't think they did. That ended my mining career . The doctor said no more beating your head against the roof for you . That was back in 2008 . I still wake up 2 or 3 times a week at 4 am . Its Hard to stop working like that. I Miss it . But my new life with Cathy is very exciting . We do so many things together . Being truly Happy is new to me and its very easy to get used to. When you live the way I was used to , you wonder why you put up with the things I did . Mostly because that was what you were used too . My life now has a real happiest , not a pretending happiest , that you are ........ Life is to short to have it any other way . Steve Cordial
P.S. I love my Grand Children . They are a big part of my life . God gives us kids and they are great . But Grand Children are more special , You can spoil them and send them back home . Isn't that Great. My Grand Daughters from Kyle and Leslie are very well behaved . They love to ride the pontoon boat , And Sawyer is a very good driver , She drove down the lake without my help , a little over 10 miles . I was so impressed . She and Maddie both drive their Daddy car ,sitting in their Daddy's lap , just the way he learned to drive . Lorie and Chad boys are going on 11 this Month . They were born on my Dad's Birthday . They loved to go Fishing , Pa Paw Plans to start them on Bass fishing this year . And Cecilia is 6 months old now . This is Nick and Ginny daughter , Cathy is so proud of her , She is named after Cathy middle name Cecile . She is making the walker roll very fast . In we love them very much . We are very happy with our Grandchildren .
