Steve's Story
Life
I went to Compton JC after high school and got my AA in Computer Science. Got a job as a IBM computer operator and worked my way up to a Systems Programmer and have be doing that and related jobs ever since. I married my wife Maria in 1976 and we have a son (Brian) who is now 31. We bought a house in Lynwood and lived there till 1990 when we moved to Downey. I currently work for AARP in Lakewood.

Compton JC 1968-71 got my AA in Data Processing and for a while a nice draft deferment :)
Workplace
Started working at Bergen Brunswig in 1971 as a shipping clerk for a computerized AR service they offered. Worked up to a data control clerk then computer operator,then Bigger IBM mainframe computer operator. Next came shift supervisor, Jr Systems Programmer and Manager of Computer operations. Then back to Sr. Systems programmer where I stayed till 1983 when the company moved to Orange from Carson. re I stayed till 1989 when a buyout and Technical Change of the Computer System resulted in a nice compensation package. Went to work for Pacific Pumps in Huntington Park till 1992 as Manager of Technical Support. Another merger and cutback put me out looking again in a hostile job market. Next 5 years I looked for what little there was out there in the field and started working for our local cable company in Downey. Found the work very interesting as it dealt with real pro-video production. Unfortunatly I was underemployed doing it. Added a home business that taught older and technophobics how to setup and use their VCR's. In 1997 finally got back into Mainframe computers at Pic n' Save Corporate Headquarters in Carson. 2 days after starting they were bought out by Big Lots and I stayed for 2 years till the bitter end for their compensation package. Then a friend who I worked with at Coca-Cola told me about a position a AARP where he was, doing IBM mainframe systems programming. I started there in Oct 1999 and am hoping it lasts till I can retire someday..(at least it can't get bought out :)
