Steve's Story
Life
After graduating from Classen High School in 1962, Steve went to BYU on an athletic scholarship, where he was named to the 'All American' wrestling team by The Amateur Wrestling News in 1967. He graduated with a BS in Business that same year and then went on to complete a Masters Degree (MBA) from the University of Texas (Austin) in 1969, where he was also the assistant wrestling coach. Steve entered the Navy in June 1969 and went on to spend 23 years as a Naval Officer involved in numerous operational and leadership positions including (1) 3 years in the Vietnam theater of operations; (2) 4 years in the Personnel Exchange Program as an instructor and operational commander with the British Royal Navy in England; (3) various shipboard assignments where he qualified and performed in all aspects of operating a warship at the senior level; and (4) management of a weapons systems production, storage, and waterfront shipping operation in which he supervised over 900 Civil Service and military personnel. The last eight years of Steve's Naval career involved Executive Officer, Commanding Officer and Naval Base Commander positions in Hawaii and England, responsible for up to 550 people as well as sensitive diplomatic and international relations. being the Commanding Officer having the best community relations program of all U.S. military commands in Britain two years in a row, which is still unprecedented in the history of the Award. Since closing his U.S. Naval Base in Cornwall, England in 1993 and retiring, Steve worked four years in a Golf Club with sales and organization responsibilities, and established three successful small businesses: (1) an animal care/estate security business operating throughout southwest England; (2) Anchorage House Guest Lodge - started from the family home and built up from a basic level and Tourist Board rating into the highest rated guest house in Cornwall. Anchorage House has just been awarded 'Cornwall Guest Accommodation of the Year 2008/09' and Southwest England B & B of the Year, and was twice awarded 'Best Bed and Breakfast in Britain and Ireland,' (2003 and 2005), 'Guest House/Bed and Breakfast of the Year 2007' (Cornwall), and 'Bed and Breakfast of the Year 2005, Southwest England'; and (3) Boscundle Manor Country House Hotel and Restaurant - purchased in March 2002 and then transformed this beautiful, but 'tired' Grade II Listed, 250 year-old hotel into a very profitable and successful 3-Star Hotel. Steve married Jane Fridd in 1977, and they are still both active in operating their businesses in England.
