Steve's Story
Life
Steve Fetter is dean of the School of Public Affairs at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he has been a professor since 1998. His research interests include arms control and nonproliferation, nuclear power and health effects of radiation, and climate change and energy supply. He received a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and a S.B. in physics from MIT.
Steve serves on the National Academy of Sciences Committee on International Security and Arms Control, the Department of Energy's Nuclear Energy Research Advisory Committee, the board of directors of the Sustainable Energy Institute and the Arms Control Association, the board of governors of the RAND Graduate School, the advisory board of Human Rights Watch's Arms Division, the University of Chicago's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Non-Proliferation, and the Board of Editors of Science and Global Security. In 1993-94, he was special assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy. He has been a Council on Foreign Relations international affairs fellow at the State Department and a visiting fellow at Stanfords Center for International Security and Arms Control, Harvards Center for Science and International Affairs, MITs Plasma Fusion Center, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He has served as vice chairman of the Federation of American Scientists, and as associate director of the Joint Global Change Research Institute.
Steve lives in Maryland with his wife, Marie, and his daughter, Emily, and his son, Max. Marie, who was born and raised in Manhattan, is a nurse-midwife and nurse-practitioner. Emily is a senior in Government and Politics at the University of Maryland. Max is a freshman at St. Mary's College of Maryland.
