Steve's Story

Life After I graduated HS, a lot has changed. In the 2nd half of 2000, when I started college, I became politically active. I attended the sold out MSG Nader Rally. I went to loads of concerts and met the singers. I drove up to Massachussetts with my friend Anneliese to see Ani, as well, even staying at a random person's house. I've had Quentin Tarantino pass me by at a Fiona Apple concert, which was pretty exciting. I had my hair bleached, which was a mistake but exciting nonetheless. In 2001, I decided I didn't want to work at Foodtown and started Wegmans. In June of 2001, I decided to revisit my past by visiting my family out in Denver Colorado for the week. I came back and took a cruise w/ my family to Mexico and Grand Cayman. Of course, Sept 11 was a tragedy and really was a crazy time. Luckily, I didn't know anyone who died, but it was still scary. I went to see my favorite singer Tori Amos 3 nights in a row with my cousin, internet friends and my friend Anneliese in NYC. The third night I pushed myself to the front barricade after the first encore was over and met her an hour later. On my birthday, Anneliese and I drove to Boston and saw Tori again. During the end of 2001, I bought a new laptop, bought a new (used) car, and finally was able to have fun spending money I was earning. In the beginning of 2002, I flew to Denver again for the week. A month later, Anneliese and I decided to drive to St Louis Missouri to see another Ani concert. I made it there in pretty good time and we went to the top of the Gateway Arch. Then we continued to visit an old HS friend in Chicago, which was a 5 hour ride going 100mph through most of Illinois. We pondered driving onto Denver or Kansas, but ended up coming home. A month later, my family and I drove down to New Orleans. An amazing trip! I was working at The WIZ during this time, and went to a few concerts during that summer including Alanis Morissette and Z100's Zootopia with my best friend Jason. Most of the summer I worked, and then in September of 2002, I flew to Santa Barbara California for the day to see an Alanis concert. I got there around noon, spent the day walking around the city, shopping, going to the beach, and then meeting my friend from there in the afternoon. We saw the concert and the next morning I flew back! Two days after coming back from Cali, I boarded an Amtrak train to visit my cousin in Denver. I met some really interesting but strange people on this trip, but it was another unforgettable time. Went to another Tori Amos concert at the Riverside Church in NYC, a very rare show, and almost met her again. I ended 2002 at a party with a friend on the roof of a building directly beneath the Empire State Building, which was an experience. 2003 wasn't such a great year. I spent most of it working, although I had my first boyfriend, Tony for a few months. January I went to Denver once again and surprised my cousin for her birthday. I called her from the garage telling her I was sorry I couldn't make it. While we were on the phone I snuck into her room and shocked the hell out of her. We spent that week going bar hopping downtown and went up to Boulder. I dated my boyfriend for about 3 months, but unfortunately it fizzled out. I also was outed to my parents around this time, which led to lots of fights. I worked more and went with my parents to Maryland for the week. I worked more and hung out with Jason. In the late summer of 2003, I saw Tori again at PNC with Ben Folds for her 40th birthday. I started William Paterson immediately after, and continued working at the GAP. The late fall/early winter was a very hectic time for my best friend, and I spent New Years Eve with him at my house. January, I went back to Denver for my cousin's birthday. Since then I mostly have just been going to school more, working and started a new job at American Eagle which I love. I am planning to graduate college in 2005. After that I plan to move to Denver, look for a job, and travel more. School I started school at the Pied Piper Nursery school when I was young and then went to Kindergarten and First grade at the Freehold Elementary School. Because I had just missed the cut-off date and my skills weren't up to par with what I was supposed to be, they made me go through first grade again, but this time at the Freehold Learning Center. I went through first to fifth grade at the FLC. Then I entered the Freehold Intermediate School. During Intermediate school, I was starting to learn what I liked, who I was, but that didn't happen as much as in High School. I went to the Freehold Borough High School starting in 1996. A lot of the time I was picked on for stupid stuff in HS and I was very insecure of myself. Towards my senior year and definitely now, most of the people who bullied me are friends or at least nice to me. Looking back, I wouldn't have gotten myself so worked up over trivial comments, and would have played along with them, but back then I was young and didn't know. I let people make fun of me for the dumbest crap, and it totally eroded my self-esteem, but that's High School for you. Honestly, I probably wouldn't go back through High School, but there were pa...Expand for more
rts of it that were integral for who I am now. College I started Brookdale Community College right after graduating from High School in 2000. During that time I became very politically active in the Nader campaign. I went to his rally at MSG in NYC that sold out with 15,000 people. During my first years at Brookdale, I mostly went back and forth with bad and good grades. I didn't study, but I did my homework most of the time. I commuted to Brookdale, obviously, so I mostly worked on the side and hung out with close friends. Towards the end of Brookdale, I was pressured a lot to work on transferring (which I had planned to do). I was accepted to the 3 or 4 colleges I had applied to. I was surprisingly accepted to Rutgers, although that was revoked due to failing my algebra course. I then decided between University of Colorado at Denver and William Paterson University. I didn't want to go to Colorado because of my boyfriend at the time, but he told me he didn't want to interfere with what I wanted to do. Nonetheless, I never sent in the deposit and ended up going to William Paterson starting last Fall 03. I actually really like Willy P most of the time, aside from the disorganization of it sometimes. I come home from Thursdays to Monday mornings, and it works out pretty well. I have made some kewl friends there. Especially my friend Dave with whom I go to the diner with on a weekly basis. It's a nice little school, not too far away, but far enough to have a life of my own during the week. I am not a hard studier, but I do my work and I make sure I put my all into papers that involve me speaking my mind. I usually get fickle grades...B+s and C-'s. I dont party, but I mostly go to the diner and spend my nights on AOL talking to friends and downloading music. I plan on graduating late..probably early to mid 2005. Workplace I started working when I was around 13 years old. I worked in the Englishtown Auction, but it wasn't really work. I got paid pretty well though by the woman who ran the pet store and my grandmother who ran a rug stand. My real jobs started up when I was in High School. I started working at Freehold Foodtown on 33, which everyone recognizes me from. The best part was I got to work with my two best friends at the time, Jason Haley and Anneliese Aufiero. We had our fights and we had our great times. While I hated the place a lot of the time, I miss it in some ways. While I miss it, I would never go back. After the exodus from Foodtown in February of 2001, I, along with my friends moved to the new big gourmet supermarket Wegmans in Manalapan. I met a lot of great people there. I did almost every department in there at one time or another and loved my job. I facillitated the training of most of their new cashiers, which I liked a lot. However, they decided to jettison a load of their employees for the sake of hiring new ones at lower wages. My termination from there was deemed necessary over a meager 40 cent coupon during February of 2002. Since them I've never forgiven them for that (although I did make sure to get them fined $5,000 for the early release of the Harry Potter DVD 2 years ago) I went next door to The WIZ in which an ex classmate/friend Desiree helped me get the job there. I only spent 6 months with them and for the most part liked my job. We had a great and diverse crew, but they decided to close stores, including ours. A liquidation company took us over for a couple of months. That was a pretty interesting time. At the end of September, they closed. Immediately following the shut-down of The WIZ, I had a job lined up at The GAP in the Freehold Raceway Mall. It wasn't my first choice, but it was a job I had to take to pay my bills. For the majority of the time I hated working at The GAP. I made a lot of really sweet friends there, but the management there was very uptight and picked on stupid things. For the most part, I always felt like my intelligence or my work was thought to be low according to their standards. I stayed there from October of 2002 to March/April of 2004. I started at American Eagle Outfitters in the Freehold Raceway Mall in April of 2004. After about a month, we moved into our new, bigger location in the mall. So far I love my job. It's probably my favorite job of all the jobs I've had, and I can't see myself wanting to leave anytime soon. They have already put me on register and they always have nice things to say and help me out with hours. I, in turn do the same by helping them out when they need me to help out or by getting them lots of credit cards. 99% of the people I work with are really nice and it helps make it a harmonious work environment. I am so happy I made the choice to move jobs, because I was really unhappy at The GAP. When I get out of college, I would like to pursue a job doing Public Relations for celebrities, specifically musicians. I would also like to do some anthropological research on the side and write some books. My main goal is to make enough to live comfortably and have some disposable income in order to buy the things I want, but I dont necessarily needs millions. Although, if it comes my way, I would take it.
