Steve's Story

Life Here's what I've been up to for the last 30 years or so... After graduation from AHS in '76 I went to BCC and received my AA after 11 months (CLEP tests are a Good Thing!). About 3 months after leaving BCC I entered the US Air Force as an Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) Specialist. I came home from Tech School and married the former Karen Tanner in March 1978 and moved her to Keesler AFB, MS. In the summer of 1978 we were stationed at Homestead AFB in south Florida where I worked on F-4 Phantoms. After 2 years, I went to Denver, CO, and cross-trained into the F-16 Avionics Intermediate Shop (AIS) program. We spent the next 3 1/2 years at Hill AFB, Utah, which is where our kids, Michael (now 26) and Christine (now 24) were born. We enjoyed living in Utah, where we spent a lot of time playing golf and camping in the mountains. In late 1983 we moved back to Denver where I served as a technical instructor at Lowry AFB for another 3 1/2 years. While stationed at Lowry I played on the base golf team, traveling to courses at military installations around northern Colorado and southern Wyoming each Friday (great duty if you can get it!). I also backpacked and flyfished during the summers and hunted each fall, and we just generally enjoyed spending a lot of time in the mountains. While serving in Florida, Utah and Colorado I continued my college education and completed by bachelors degree in December 1986, right as I came up for reenlistment. General Electric Aerospace made us a good offer so I opted out and left the USAF. We moved the family to Huntsville, AL, in early 1987 and I spent 3 years as the Manpower, Personnel and Training manager for the Navy's CASS program. After 3 years at GE Aerospace we elected to move back to central Florida in early 1990 so the kids could be closer to their grandparents. I took a job with Cincinnati Bell Information Systems (CBIS) in Maitland, FL, just north of Orlando. I had started working on a Masters degree while...Expand for more
in Huntsville and completed my thesis work after relocating to Florida, receiving my MS degree in 1994. Cincinnati Bell Inc spun off CBIS and the company became Convergys, moving its offices to Lake Mary, FL, in the late 1990's. I stayed at Convergys for a total of 13 years, working as a senior instructor, system tester, project manager, software developer, integration test lead, systems engineer, senior manager and senior architect. Karen worked at AAA National Headquarters in Lake Mary as Administrative Assistant to the Managing Director in charge of AAA's internet group. She spent 11 1/2 years at AAA. While trying to help a friend find a job I ended up getting an offer myself from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Fort Worth, Texas (got the call for an interview while honeymooning in Maui for our 25th). I had previously decided I didn't like the direction the company was heading. The kids had both graduated from high school (Michael had finished his AA degree at Seminole Community College), so we no longer had to worry about school districts. We took the offer and moved again, and, somewhat surprisingly, the kids decided to join us. I've been working on the F-35 program at LM Aero since June 2003. My first position was back in the automated test arena, coordinating the rollout of a $100M program to provide a standard tester to F-35 suppliers. After 3 years in that job I moved to the proposal preparation team where I work today. We're treating our time in Texas like a military assignment, giving ourselves a few years to decide if we like being Texans and want to stay here. The nature of major DOD development programs like the F-35 is that, sooner or later, the majority of the jobs start moving to other locations like customer sites around the world, so we may have another move or two ahead of us. We like Fort Worth, but we'll take life as it comes! That's my long winded story... hope to hear from some of you that I've lost track of over the years!
