Steve's Story

OK, I'll try, but I communicate more freely in images. (You have to check out my recent artwork in my photos.) It seems to me that when I try to use words to tell my stories, the orignal intended meaning often gets twisted in word play, mine or yours. Here is a short story for any who'd like one. There was once a person known to a few of you, who was youthful, jovial, and full of himself. He spent almost all his time just having fun and trying to make others laugh. He got even more cocky after picking up a wife, a secondary teaching certificate, and a contract to teach. His career began in a small Nebraska town where he fell in love with all the public school youth. The times were "the Dickens," as in best-of-and. is protagonist's charge. Then in the midst of that winter, the Vietnamese Tet offensive made the news with body counts posted each evening, and the armed forces draft notice of the young highschool teacher spurred him to a different commitment his heart never approved. That was the beginning of the final chapter, because that guy could never come back from the events he faced. They had to send someone else back in his place. At least the ex-teacher soldier died innocent, but this replacement just never could get it right. He stumbled through the mess he kept making of his life, sweeping like Emmitt Kelly, and not realizing what made him that way was the gift he had given. It was exactly the thing that the young man you may have known offerred up with pride. His life. The story ends as the replacement brings validation to the young person's values by telling his story now and then. See? Happy ending. Smile.
