Steve's Story
Life
My Spouse
I met my wife when I helped a co-worker move to a new apartment. After two years of dating I got the courage to propose...and she said YES! She was working in medical research at the time but after starting a family she decided to change careers; got her MS and became a teacher. She taught biology at Freeman HS then became chairman of the center at Godwin HS until she retired in 2014.
My Kids
My older son, Justin, graduated from college in 2007 with a degree in exercise physiology and soccer :o) He worked in a physical therapy clinic for a year and a half then applied and was accpeted into MCV's physical therapy program and is now a practicing DPT. But, playing soccer is his passion. He loves the game and has been to England and twice to Brazil to play and train. He had dreams of playing at the professional level but reality has set in and he recognized PT is more secure. He traveled to Europe after graduation to tryout for some teams over there with the hope of playing professionally. H...Expand for more
e was offered a spot on a team in Germany but the pay was low and he didn't think it was enough to live on it over there. For now, he still plays in just about every adult league there is.
My younger son, Kyle, graduated from VCU in 2014 in mechanical engineering. As most mechanical engineers, he wanted to work in the auto industry. So, the day after Christmas 2014, he moved to Detroit to work for Chrysler. The auto industry is brutal for young engineers; good pay but 80+ hour weeks. That got old fast and he moved back to RVA in 2017 to work for a German pump manufacturer. Sooo, glad to have him close to home...and me.
My Job
I worked for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. I had varied responsibilities over my career with the agency but especially enjoyed working in field. For the last 20+ years of my career I worked in an office in the underground storage tank program. I provided technical guidance for the state's clean-up insurance fund.
I retired in 2015 after 41 years off state service.
