Steven's Story

I have been pestered to do this for years. Not a big fan of social media and have been too busy these last few years to get it done. Most know I was around Gilcrest for a few years after graduation. Attended collage in Sterling at NJC then got drafted (the next to the last group drafted before it ended) in 1972. Joined the Air Force the day I reported for the draft(didn't want to crawl though rice paddies). I served in Michigan, Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. After my discharge I returned to Colorado and farmed with my family for 9 years in Yuma county half way between Holyoke and Wray. I met the the love of my life in 1983 and asked her to marry me at a Broncos game in October of that year. Remember this because October has become a good and bad month in my life. We married on March 2, 1984 and spent the next year on the farm. I decided in 85 to move to town in Holyoke and went to work as a service truck driver (tires) and auto parts counterman at Stickney's Inc. until they went out of business in 1986. We moved to Denver to find work in September and went to work for Parts Inc. warehouse as an order taker. Later to manage parts stores for them in Aurora. In 87 Became Auto parts manager for Parker Automotive. (hey, you said you wanted to know my profile!) We moved back to Holyoke in 1988 and I managed a mobile home park there for a year before I went to work for Scholl Oil managing their service center. In 1996 I left Scholl's to manage the Holyoke NAPA store. They sold in 97 so I went to work rebuilding old school buses to haul hogs for D&D farms in Holyoke & Wray. In 1999 I quit D&D and went to work for the Big A store in Holyoke later to become CARQUEST when Big A sold their company. In the meantime Marcia my wife had worked as a nurses aid for nursing homes from Aurora to Holyoke until her health started to fail her. When her twin sister asked me to go to work for her husband as the manager of the l...Expand for more
ocal appliance store I gave in and spent the next 13 years from 2001 to 2014 managing Sullivan's appliance in Holyoke. Marcia's health began to decline in 2011 and after several issues she spent 3 different periods in the nursing home. I left the appliance store in 2014 and worked part time as an opener for a local fast food place making breakfast burritos from 3:30 in the morning until 1:00 pm 3 or 4 days a week.. I did this until 2017 when we had to fly Marcia out flight for life because of congestive heart failure. She was put in the nursing home on out return from Greeley and in the meantime her dementia had progressed. I spent 6 to 8 hours a day caring for her in the nursing home because of the lack of care she received. In 2018 when I was at home she fell and broke her hip. We went back to Greeley while she had a hip replacement and was back at the nursing home for 4 days when she fell and broke her pelvis. We spent a little over a month in Greeley that summer and she would never walk again. I took Marcia out of the nursing home in October of 2019, she went on hospice at home in April of 2020 and I have now cared for her for almost 9 years. I had been the lone care giver for the last year and she was in my arms when she passed on October 16 of this year. This was exactly one year from the day I removed her from the nursing home. She was allowed to die in her home with me holding her as she wished. I am writing this on Thanksgiving morning because I am so very thankful I could do for her what others could not. The 6 months on hospice was not fun but I would not ever trade it for the time we spent together. Tell your significant other you love them every day, you will never know when that will be the last day. Trust God, He will give you all you need. the picture above was from Christmas of 2018 after she was disabled. Her sons came to spend the day with us, we had been married 36 years. This is who I AM TODAY.
