Steven's Story
A story about me now?
Why?
Who would want to read that?
I'm getting old and boring just like my parents were when I was in school. I'd rather reflect on the past and write something to prove just how little I was paying attention in English class.
Since I've gotten up into my forties I started taking a look back on my life and came to the realization that some of the most fun years I ever had were the latter years of junior high school. Don't get me wrong, my high school years were fun too, but I had moved to another state and had all the stress of a new school, new friends to make, and basically a whole new life to start. Life during the high school years also seemed to take on a new seriousness and sense of urgency that wasn't there before with all the pressure of the whole "What the hell am I going to do with my life" thing creeping into a part of my brain that until then was reserved for much more important things like what new heavy metal album was on my most wanted list and where the party was going to be over the weekend. The junior high years had none of that pressure and was pretty much a carefree time of change. Everything was changing and most of it seemed to be changing for the better. Friendships were now based more on common interests and comradery instead of how close a person lived to you or how well their parents got along with you...Expand for more
rs. Sometimes, having absolutely nothing to do and nowhere to go was actually fun if done with the right people. We began to realize very important things in life too.
We realized:
Just how good big hair made a girl look that until then you may not have even noticed had hair.
A band like AC/DC could lose and replace it's lead singer and still be just as popular as or even more popular than before.
Every school dance was supposed to end with the song "Freebird".
Concert tee shirts could actually be considered part of a school uniform.
We could almost always find a friend to date the friend of the person we wanted to date.
The next school day after a date, the guy's friends all wanted to know what happened. The girl's friends already knew.
Older siblings were actually great to have, once they were able to drive that is.
If it wasn't for "Peer Pressure" we probably wouldn't have done anything and wouldn't have any stories to tell now.
I often wonder if I was able to go back and do it again if I would have done things different (you know that whole 20/20 hindsight thing). My answer is always the same. No. I may not have done anything perfectly. I may have fallen on my face plenty of times. I may have done some wrong and been wronged. But it is those things along with the friends I had, that made me who I am today and give me the stories to share.
