Steven's Story
School
I did a hell of a lot of stuff when you stack it all up. What didn't I do in high school. I didn't study enough but I think I balanced everything else pretty well. Most of my sports was covered under the Gurney Football Leauge rather than our Division D Athletics. The two bravest things, okay three things, maybe four brave (or stupid) things I did while in school were: wearing those yellow shoes in 6th grade, running for student council and saying "Poppycock" like Pat Paulson, on that video tape (I always pushed the envelope with technology. I still do) and playing soccer in my senior year with Larry Foden as coach. I was the only senior on the team. Eddie Ryder was the closest to my age. Everyone else was a junior or sophomore. Oh! four things. Producing that damn talent show with Diedericks. No wonder I'm still in the entertainment industry!
Since writing that when Classmates started back in 19?? I've become a chef and I moved back into Sag Harbor 04/13. I am on the line at The American Hotel (when your there for dinner or with the convivial bar crowd, please say, "Hi!") I'm brewing beer and vinting wine with other fermented beverage in my kitchen. I have a brewing blog which you can write me and I'll send you the address (cause Classmates wonât let you post those) My mom, who taught second grade at Sag Harbor Schools, passed away from complications of Alzheimer's 12/08/2008 and my dad passed away 05/03/2014. I've got the house on Jermain Ave. I'm also active as Secretary with the Sag Harbor Lions Club. Come and join me!
Since my dad'Âs death, I'ÂÂve been going through papers that both of my parents saved. Lots of report cards, programs letters and the like.
I'm sorry I didn'Ât get the French back then Arthur Cardone. I use it a lot now in the kitchen. I know you think I never applied myself, but i had other...Expand for more
things to do. We had to take a language and latin was offered any more so I chose your class. I apologize for not studying it more then.
Thanks to Dick Gurney who gave me my recreation in all kinds of weather. You treated me very kindly and you got to be another dad to me. I wouldnâÂÂt have told you that cause you had enough kids of your own plus the âWhite Whale."
Thanks to Mike Cerrullo who opened other creative outlets for me that came in handy in life: photography, journalism and newspaper composition. You were a younger teacher and I identified with your humor. I also thought that you were Jim Croce'Âs brother with that bushy mustache. Remember the comic strip I drew with you as the main character? ÂZoots who knows where that name came from.
To Al Heckert, you were a true inspiration to me. You nurtured my creativity and I got to explore the physical theatrical arts heavily which brought me through my entire professional theatrical career.
Miss Gregory, you inspired a love of vocabulary which developed a year after high school. I put together your tutelage in journalism with Cerullo'Âs newspaper production guidance. I still have the golf umbrella you gave me for my fortieth birthday. Bob, Tom and I loved to visit you after you retired.
Coach Bob Vishno, what can I say. Im not an Âorganized athletic man, but I loved being a part of the team no matter which team it was. You always were fair and treated me and my friends with great respect and I know that you valued our contribution to the team. I still donât like the smell of a locker room though.
Now since I wrote that, I had to leave work at the Hotel because of excruciatingly high level of pain â osteoarthritis in my right hip. I had a Total right hip replacement and now by July just before our 40th reunion Iâm finishing up my physical therapy. Hooray!
