Steven's Story

Hello again to all of you. It is great to find so many faces and voices from the past.................and hopefully from the future! If you are reading this, then you are probably trying to figure out who I am, if you know me, and/or what's going on with me now. I'll start a little earlier than the BHS days. Based on some the questions I have received, this is some necessary primer. Junior high school: I attended middle school (i.e. junior high school) at Meadowbrook Middle School in Poway, California. The grades were 6th through 8th. One of the unique things about that experience was the multi-age (MA) program. A few classes had the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders combined in common classrooms. It was quite an experiment, but had overall good results. Another point of interest is that my last name wasn't Flickinger at the time. I still carried my surname from birth. This is going to really mess up people (like Ron Topp) who try to look me up in the '76-'79 Meadowbrook yearbooks! I became a Flickinger after my mother remarried and we moved to Bremerton. High school: I attended Poway High School for the first semester (still not a Flickinger yet). In California, the high school grades are 9-12 whereas in Washington they are 10-12. It was great to be in high school. It felt like an achievement after all the junior high years. My step-father was in the service (Navy). The submarine we were assigned to was sent to PSNS for overhaul, so we moved to Bremerton. I finally became a Flickinger in name. I attended Central Kitsap Junior High School for the second semester of 9th grade. Yep, I was unhappily a "pumpkin head" for half a year. I met some nice people there, but it was a real disappointment to "go back" to junior high. For the 1980-81 school year, I was delighted to attend Bremerton high school. It felt like I really belonged there, and there were so many good people. I played football for the sophomore team and did the sets/lighting for the drama club. I dated Melody Knapp for the entire year (and most of the following year too). I attended First Christian Church of Bremerton over on Veneta Avenue on the West side. Some of us that went to school and church together are Tracy Burns, Andy Perdue, Cathy Neal, Rochelle Dix, Diane Guertin. I lived on Olympic Avenue over by the shipyard's Naval Avenue gate. Summer was filled playing baseball and football. There were "pick-up" games all over town. It seems like we played from morning to sundown every day. Good times. The 1981-82 school year was very much the same as the prior year except that I didn't play football for the school. I did the sets and lighting for the drama club. That was an excellent group of people - both years! I attended the Kitsap Peninsula Vocational Skills Center and was in the electronics class. For fun you should check out the photo section of my profile. I annotated a couple of the yearbook pictures that tried to show that I didn't really exist for football or the KPVSC. As for the drama club photos, I stayed out of them since I thought it was more appropriate for the actors/actresses. At the end of the 1982 school year, the submarine we were assigned to was supposed to move out of PSNS and back to San Diego. Painfully, my world was being ripped...Expand for more
apart. I really wanted to stay at BHS and graduate with my friends. I was happy and proud to be a blue and gold Knight. It was not to be and I went back to San Diego at the beginning of the summer in 1982. That really put and end to the relationship with my high school sweetheart, and I left without being able to say good-bye to most of my BHS friends. For many of you, I simply vanished. I really, really missed being there with you all for our senior year and graduation. Now I can say, from first-hand experience, that being a transferring senior sucks. I lived in Vista, California and attended Vista High School for my senior year. It was a difficult adjustment since the social groups were already established. I eventually made some good friends and that made the year bearable. I am looking for you guys too (you know who you are)! So, in 1983 I graduated from Vista High School ...........one blue and gold Knight misplaced in a sea of red, white, and black panthers. College: It was only about two weeks after high school was over and I was off to college. I really wanted to go to the University of Michigan (Hail to the victor, Go Blue!) since I was born there and lived my early childhood years there. I have always been a huge Michigan fan and attending there would have been a dream. That was not to be since it was more expensive than I could afford and was very far from my family. I looked at several other options, but chose DeVry Institute of Technology in Phoenix. It was pretty close to home, was significantly more affordable, had a good reputation, and was year-round school. This meant I could get my 4 year degree in 3 calendar years - Yahtzee! So I went to college in Phoenix and graduated in 1986. Engineering school is tough, and I was relieved to have made it through. While I was there, I met a wonderful girl that helped me through it all. We eventually married after my college graduation and return to the Seattle area. Career: After college, I returned to the Bremerton. At the beginning of 1987, I started work at The Boeing Company in Everett for the commercial airplane division. It is hard to believe this was more than 35 years ago. I design electrical/electronic systems for various functions on all of the commercial airplane models. I also work for the FAA to certify airplane designs. I moved to the Everett area and now live in Arlington. I was married in 1988. We had our first son in 1989 and the other in 1991. It is hard to believe that so many years have passed for all of us, but it's true. Over the years I have looked for many of you (and continue to do so). The internet and information systems are continuing to improve and help us build bridges to the past. It is pretty exciting in many ways. I hope that the snippets and stories that your old friends and acquaintances have offered in forums like this will help inspire you all to make those long overdue connections. I sincerely hope that success and happiness has found each of you. I can be easily reached at sdf "at" hughes.net and on FaceBook. Please don't hesitate to send a message and reminisce about the people and the happenings from way back when, catch up on life events, or even start a new friendship. See you around the 'net. Flick.
