Steven's Story
Wow! It's been a long time since I wrote that first post. A lot has changed since then. I'm not going to bore you with the details,
The "new" profile photo is from 1983-1984, when I was serving as a volunteer firefighter/EMT in Dewitt, NY, right outside Syracuse. This was my second stint as a volunteer and I truly loved the service. As a matter of fact, even though I've been out of active service since 1985 due to an injury. I've never cut my ties with it and have been involved many ways. Since those days. I've always had a "first responder" emergency kit in my car. And I cannot remember how many times I've been the first or second person on the scene of one type emergency or another and rendered aid until fire-rescue and EMS arrived.
Most of you know that I had always planned to be a rabbi, but life sent me down a different path. In 1977, I was hired to the principal of a Hebrew school in Greensboro, NC. Little did I know that 3/4 of a mile down my street was a firehouse. I stopped in one day and ...Expand for more
walked out with an application. It was a little bit strange as I, along with another guy I met at the first meeting where we hoped to be voted in, were the first two Jewish people who had ever applied to the department. Not only that, but we the first Jews that had over 95% of the members had met.
With that in mind, I recently published my first book, "Fish Out of Water: 2 Jewish Guys in a Deep South Firehouse!" Currently, it's available only on Kindle. Just searcjh for my name, "Steven S. Greene.". It tells my story about being one of the first Jewish firefighters in ts department and the county! There are lots of good stories, some are funny, other are not. That was what our lives were like, for we never knew what we'd see next when the alarm bells would ring.
More importantly, a portion of the proceeds is being donated to The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in Emmetsburg MD.
I hope you and yours are all well....older, but well.
Until next time, Stay Safe and Always Be Fire-Smart!
