Steven's Story
I wish I could say that my life has been one well executed plan, but the fact is it has been ad libbed jazz most of the way. I had a few plans I was lucky enough to be able to stick to "just long enough" to make a better go of things.
The years between high school and 26 would refocus me. Alot of very positive changes came out of the
toughest and painful experiences.
By far the hardest thing I did was work fulltime to support a young family while carrying 12-15 hrs per quater at OSU. The Ohio State experience kicked my rear pretty good, as did culinary school, but I got through it.
How I came by the wonderlust that influnce my future so prominently I will never know. That and chance or Gods hand directed the rest of my life.
I fathered three sons and a step-son. Shawn 38, Erik 33 (as of this writing 5/14/09) Christopher 30 and Jason forever 17. We lost him in 1997 to an auto accident. Have three grandchildren, Arrie 12,
Zachery, 7 and Kathleen almost two. I am married to Connie Hager Lambert, my wife and almost constant companion for 35 years now.
As a chef, I worked and lived throughout the USA. Started in Ohio and worked in Helena, Montana, New Orleans, LA, Naples, FL, Biloxi/Gulfport, MS to name but a few. We also had an opportunity to live and work in Europe in Wuerzburg, Kitzingen and Munich, in Bavaria, Germany and Chamonix, France and Milan, Italy briefly due to an exchange program between the US Gov't (my employer at the time) and the French and Italian railroads, who own and operate one hotel and restaurant in each of their cities to ensure travelers at least one good place to stay and eat.
I have been able to entertain and befriend a good number of celebrties. Don Rickles with whom I shared a few meals and cigars. Patty and Eric Shinseki, a Colonel commanding the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division when I knew him and ex-Secretary of Veteran Affairs in Pres. Obama's cabinet. He was reserved and the most intellectually capable and honorable officer I ever knew, and I got to know dozens of general officers very well. All of them wonderful people.
Along the way I learned to play the French Horn. Don't know whether I'm better on trumpet or the horn. It's a certainty there's room for improvement on both!
Time demands a price of us all and from working chefs it's usally the knees that begin to cause problems. Some reinvention of myself was in order. I couldn't stand on the hard floors for hours on end anymore.

ble kitchen for our catering operation, The Chefs' Lambert LLC. I found we would need a semi to pull the trailer as they build them in 53' trailers. So, I went to school to learn to drive a truck and get a class A commercial license. We found a company that would lease a kitchen in a 53' trailer and became first response caterers for the infrastucture repair teams during natural disasters. We got a truck and when we weren't catering we would deliver freight. Connie got a license too and we began to travel the entire US and Canada delivering the goods...and yes, like the song says, in 13 years, we've been everywhere.
We provided support for about four years then just delivered freight. We see more of our family than we ever have and actually have increased what was a pretty good living. As a Chef D'Cuisine and an Executive Chef I was doing well financially. Fortunately we haven't been impacted by the economic problems.
When I behold the sunrise in the mornings through our new "office window", I still wonder what's around the next bend, where I might be tomarrow or next week. The old wonderlust. But in the evenings now, I kick back, light up a Montecristo White cigar and have a glass of a good bourbon or cognac, when I can, and I remember and wonder...a few regrets, but I am well satisfied with where I am.
2016 update...Connie has decided to leave the truck and resume her status as Domestic Godess and I will be finishing up my road adventures come April...make that December.
Some updating is in order...
On November 11, 2015, I had bariatric surgery. Doctor wanted me to get the bypass as I was up around 355, but I insisted on the sleeve. So, that's what I got. He said I would only loose about 50 lb, but I thought differently. So far it's been 120. My COPD diagnosis was rescinded and my blood tests almost two years later are close to perfect and heart is in great shape.
I have retired but I still do work with the Licking County Aging Program with Meals on Wheels delivering meals to the aging anddisabled elderly. Feeding people is, and always will be a passion of mine.
Looking forward...getting this house and property ready for sale and dejunking by this next Spring 2018 and selling our home will be the next task. I suppose we are looking south again. Don't know if we'll sell our motorhome or not. Maybe Florida in the Spring Hill area...not sure...oh well, the Good Lord willing...he'll let me know! He always has had His hands on the wheel anyway!
