Steven's Story

Life Time goes quickly, the number of years not really seeming so long but an awful lot has happened. School has always seemed to be a big portion of my life. With my mother teaching at my grade school I was often at school early and then stayed after, for sports and waiting for a ride home. After graduating (1972) from St. Paul Lutheran School, Melrose Park, IL I attended Walther Lutheran High School, which was right across the street from St. Paul. Most days found me spending extra time at school, involved in sports (footbal, basketball, tennis) each season and school plays. Singing in the Acapella choir and Christian Minstrels extended school involvement to evenings and weekends. I graduated from Walther in 1976 and continued with college at Concordia, River Forest, IL. During my time there I played on the tennis team (1977), acted in a few plays and worked on the lighting crew for others. I worked on campus for the audio visual department and ran the student photo lab, doing pictures for the yearbook and Spectator. I met and married (1979) my wife Kathie and graduated with a B.A. in elementary and secondary education (1980). Ten years later (1990) I completed an M.A. in theology and education. For seventeen more years I stayed close to school as a Lutheran elementary school teacher, serving at St. John's, Wheaton, Grace English and Nazareth in Chicago, and St. Paul, Rochelle, all in Illinois. Every year saw me involved in coaching after school, with my most insane years coaching nine teams. During these teaching years, Kathie and I were blessed with three children, Jeremy (now a pastor himself in Quincy, IL), Amanda (working in Indianapolis), and Jonathan (a sophomore at Purdue). Their events once added to my time around scho...Expand for more
ols as I went to watch them participate in a variety of sports and other things. Now we have to travel just to see each other. The most fun together recently was everyone, including my folks, going to Green Bay to see the Packers play the Seahawks on December 27, 2009. The frozen tundra and a packers win is hard to beat. I 1997 I left full-time classroom teaching to enter Concordia Seminary, St. Louis to be a student again and study for the pastoral ministry. Course work and vicarage were completed in July of 2000 and at that point I became associate pastor at Living Christ Lutheran Church in Chanhassen, MN. I continue with school still, though now it is with a larger, more diverse class called a congregation. Adult Bible classes, confirmation class, and youth involvement has me teaching a variety of ages. The summer of 2004 brought a couple of significant events with it. In July, our family moved to South Bend, Indiana, where I began to serve Our Redeemer Lutheran Church as their pastor. A month later Kathie and I celebrated our 25th anniversary. Now, in 2010 I am still in South Bend and passed 30 years of marriage. I have had my first sports related surgery Feb. 10. Tennis has stayed my main game all these years and finally caused a torn meniscus which required arthroscopic surgery. All went well and the courts will be calling again in March. A lot of things have happened over these many years but it many ways I don't feel any older. Maybe it's because I'm still in a school/education mentality. Greetings to anyone who might actually read this. Perhaps we'll connect in some way down the line. I end this biography with my most common closing because it best represents whose I am and what I'm about. In the Lord's Service, Steve
