Steven's Story

Life Going through changes... My catharsis . . . seriously writing. The poet/lyracist in me has been reborn with over 100 pieces written in the last year. Thriving on inspiration. __________________________ My Wife In 1978 I was working as a dock hand for a float plane outfit on the BC Coast when this cute girl from Gold River transferred in and stole my heart. I am very sad to report that Valerie, my wife of 38 years, passed away on November 19th, 2021 from a very rare, aggressive cancer. She was only 66 years old. My Pets Always liked the independence of cats. But, currently without any furry friends. My Kids Jen is married and living with her husband Mike in Victoria. She and I remain best friends. Not bad for a dad and daughter eh? They had their one and only child Avery in May of 2022. It's now April, 2024 and she's is a wonderful, walking, running, talking, so fun to be with, almost 2 year old. My Job Security Management - Gaming Industry My Old Friends I've been back to Calgary, Port Coquitlam and Victoria. Continue to work on genealogy projects, collaborating with my sister Gloria. Hope to contact more old friends and catch up with those I have contacted. I apologize to those I have not corresponded with for a while. Life has a way of sweeping you up and carrying you off for years at a time. Regardless, all of you have been on my mind from time to time. School Grade 1 & 2 - Norgate Park, North Vancouver, British Columbia - I remember Bob Booth and sister Barb (who I still see from time to time when visiting with my sister), Peter Drummond, a Kirpatrick, another Pete (although that wasn't his real name - we just called him that for some reason), Jimmy McCormick, Michelle (my first kiss), Wendy (my first crush). I remember Miss? Mrs? Ford - Grade 2. The ball point pen, the smell (fumes) of fresh Gestetner printed paper, soccer, sports day, President Kennedy's assassination being announced over the loudspeaker in the classroom (everyone was given the rest of the day off). Looks like Norgate Park remains a special place - but much more pricey. I think our old $10,000 rancher is something close to $1,000,000 now. Grade 2,3 & 4 - Glenbrook, S.W. Calgary, Alberta - I remember Steven (and your Mom and sister), another Steven and Stephen, Terry Krahn and his Comic Book collecting brother George, and Willie (in Lethbridge your dad said). Brian Baker (borrowed your bike a few times). I've been back to Calgary for a few visits. There had been a fire at the school when I stopped by. My sister Carolyn and her husband Steve live in Calgary. I tried contacting my grade 2 teacher Mrs. Eroshinsky. I spoke with her daughter (Mrs. E was in Arizona for the winter - sadly, she has since passed). I would really like to get back to everyone I contacted. Time is so fleeting. Grade 5 & 6 - Glamorgan, S.W. Calgary, Alberta - I remember Debbie Barnes, Simone Taylor (huge crush), Debbie Gervais, Robin Smith (big crush) who sang like a bird, Brock Harrison and his little sister, David Howse. Then there was Twin Bridges, Bragg Creek, Heritage Park (Village - the steam engine - the paddle wheeler), the Calgary Stampede and CFCN on the hill. Anyone remember the Ed Hunter Show? Will Miller of the Irish Rovers used to sing in the Smitty's Pancake House in Calgary - sang Happy Birthday to my sister Gloria. My dad worked for Husky Oil. Remember when it was the Husky Tower before it was the Calgary Tower. My first filet mignon and sherbet was at the top in the new restaurant before it opened to the public. Anybody remember "My Pop Likes Husky Care"?? Probably not. I had the reflective, orange stickers on my bike. I was supposed to go to A.E. Cross the next year but we moved back to British Columbia where grade 7 was still elementary school. Grade 7 - Viscount Alexander, Port Coquitlam, BC - I remember Joel Lafleur (tall guy), David Scow, Ala...Expand for more
n Swope (the golfer dude). Teacher Ms. McWha (the Golf Pro) and the evenings of Hockey Night In Canada and pizza in the classroom at the school. I think Ms. M drove a Ford Mustang. She's here on Vancouver Island somewhere. Grade 8 & 9 - Port Coquitlam Sr. Sec. "POCO" - I remember Susan Stephens (been in contact a few times - living in the Grenadines - jealous), Les Shorter since we were in diapers (his Mom and mine were Nursing School pals in Victoria), Mark Shorter, Billy Shorter, Alan Otway "Forgiven Time/For Given Time" - I don't think we ever decided on our proposed band name (he's still rockin' it), Eric Balasz (I got his Sun paper route - Saturdays with the ads and the comics - ouch!!), Art teacher Mr. Caldwell (Tuk Caldwell the artist - his wonderful water colours are hanging on my walls) - was living in Maple Ridge and Fiji last communication long ago - he has since passed. He taught me about native art and motifs and it stuck - check out his artwork in the art galleries everyone! Grade 10 - Windsor Sec., North Vancouver, BC - I remember Richard (Rick) Foreman (you still alive dude?), Jim (Slanky) Harris (He's in Montreal working at McGill but has decided to be a ghost), Neil Kelsey (I still have Letraset sheets in my office), Warren Ash, Kelly Jickling from across the street, Susan Todd (no relation, but then I haven't finished the family tree), Paul Hood (short conversation but very nice catching-up). Are you still with Telus? Probably retired, "The mud flats" (our own little Woodstock - I'm not kidding). Cates Park and screen printing in a tent!! Scuba diving - dive test at White Cliff Park in West Vancouver. Grade 10 & 11 - Victoria High, Victoria, BC - I remember Reid Barton (bass guitar) with whom I shared my first and only bottle of muskatel. I rode my 10-speed everywhere! Still love Victoria!! And now that my daughter lives there I visit it a lot. Family history includes the Trutch House - now a heritage home on what was, until just recently, Trutch Street. Cancel culture has renamed it. You'll probably find me at the BC Archives. Grade 11 & 12 - South Delta Senior Sec., Tsawwassen, BC - I remember Dave Prochnow, Felicity Haines (we've been in touch - need to contact again), Andrea Dufour ("Andie!!" - hope we connect), Ellen Peterson, Mr. Nicoll, (Graphic Arts and keeper of the a.b. dick offset press), Mr. Marsden, et al. Mike Gillette Music - I still have the guitars!! Thanks Mike!, and his buddy/teaching collaborator Ray Moga (bass player with the CBC Orchestra before the CBC budget got slashed). The Delta Optimist newspaper where I ran an a.b. dick 360 and served as a darkroom tech - hey Terry and the rest of the gang! The Town & Country Inn is no more. It is now a casino belonging to the company I work for. Douglas College in Richmond, Surrey & New Westminster, BC - Graphic Arts & Advertising (all pre-computers - it's all a blur). Spent 13 years working as a parent with the BC education system (PACs and DPAC) - My wife and I helped my daughter through with honours (yeah!). The trenches of education in BC are not pretty (still not). Be a parent and be apparent. "cavaet emptor". Heavily into genealogy (an admitted researchaholic). Music influences: Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Slash, Carlos Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Coco Montoya and all the others. No more noodling on the guitar - arthritis man! However... I discovered I can manage the bass. So there's that!! Discovering massive amounts of incredible talent on YouTube. Rock lives!! The Warning from Mexico - incredible!! Mammoth, The Pretty Reckless, Plush, Halestorm Evanescence, Dorothy, Daughtry, Zepparella . . . Great stuff!! Polyphia anyone? And always etched in my brain: Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, The Eagles, Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai [For the Love of God].
