Steven's Story
Attended college at both UT-Chattanooga and UT-Knoxville where I received a Bachelors of Arts degree with a major in Biology and a minor in English Literature. Went to graduate school at the Oak Ridge Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences where I received a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences in 1979. After a 3-year postdoc at University of California, Irvine, I accepted a tenure-track position as a Professor in the Department of Pathology, University of Utah, where I remained for 18 years. In 2000, I was recruited by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, WA to build their Systems Biology program. I have also been the Chief Biologist at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) at PNNL and Chief Scientist for Systems Biology. Currently I am a Laboratory Fellow at PNNL where I lead a project to develop machine-learning approaches for building predictive models of cancer for the Cancer...Expand for more
Systems Biology Consortium.
In my spare time, I have written several commercial software programs, showed dogs and learned to ride horses. I also wrote a monthly column for The Scientist magazine for a couple of years. Currently, I am Board Chair of the Arts Center Task Force, a non-profit building a performing arts center in the Tri-Cities-Cities of eastern Washington State. I am also Membership Chair of Columbia Center Rotary Club and do live-streaming of Sunday services at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Richland, WA. I have been married for the last 15 years to a fantastic woman, Julie, whose two sons live and work in Seattle.
For hobbies, I do photography and video editing. I am a big wine collector, especially because Julie and I live in the heart of Washington wine country! I am active in Rotary, in supporting the local performing arts community and sharing my love of cooking with friends and family!
