Stewart's Story

Military Storekeeper First Class (Seabee Combat Warfare) William Stewart Cunningham II United States Navy A native of Marietta, Georgia, Petty Officer Cunningham enlisted in the United States Navy in November, 1987. Upon graduation from Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Florida, he attended Storekeeper "A" School and transferred to his first command, USS Wainwright CG-28, Charleston, South Carolina, as a Storekeeper Seamen Recruit ultimately advancing to Petty Officer Third Class during his two and a half year tour. Upon the successful completion of this tour, SK3 Cunningham departed for his next command at Patrol Combatant Missile Hydrofoil Squadron 2, Mobile Logistics Support Group, Key West, Florida, where he served as Depot Level Repairable Storekeeper for two years and was promoted to Petty Officer Second Class. His next assignment brought him to Naval Recruiting District Headquarters, Atlanta, Georgia, for two years, where he served as Reimbursement Clerk, Airline Reservation Agent, Utility Invoice Processor, Promotional Items Manager, Recruiting Advertising Display Coordinator and Engraving Specialist. He was meritoriously advanced to Petty Officer First Class under the "Recruiting Excellence Incentive Program". He then moved onto Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center, Savannah, Georgia, where he served 11 Reserve Units with 300 personnel as the Independent Duty Storekeeper, Contracting Officer and Assistant Facilities Manager during a two year tour. He performed more than 60 funeral honor support details. His next tour shipped him off to Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit 207, Jacksonville, Florida, where he served as the Independent Duty Storekeeper and Contracting Officer for three years. He performed drug countermeasure surveillance operations along the Florida coastline, Panama Canal zone and Alexandria, Egypt, which led to the seizure of $5M dollars in drugs...Expand for more
and the arrest of more than 20 criminals. He then transferred to Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center, Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he served as Independent Duty Storekeeper, Contracting Officer, Facilities Manager and Casualty Assistance Calls Officer Assistant for 11 Reserve Units with 350 personnel for three years. He was active in the community operating the Adopt-A-Mile program, Combined Federal Campaign and performed over 70 funeral honor support details. His next tour landed him at Naval Reserve Center, Clearwater/St. Petersburg, Florida, where he served as Logistics Supervisor, Contracting Officer, Facilities Manager for 11 Reserve Units with 450 personnel for three years. He also held the title normally held by a Chief Petty Officer as the Casualty Assistance Calls Officer. His final assignment transferred him to Naval Reserve Readiness Command Northeast, Newport, Rhode Island, where he served as the Logistics Supervisor, Leading Petty Officer, Facilities Manager, Safety Officer, Standards of Conduct, Ethics, Waste, Fraud and Abuse Inspector, Command Master At Arms, Security Force Team Coordinator and President, First Class Association. SK1(SCW) Cunningham is authorized to wear the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (6 awards), the Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation (2 awards), the Navy Good Conduct Medal (6 awards), the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (2 awards), the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Recruiting Service Ribbon, the Coast Guard Special Operation Service Ribbon (2 awards), the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with bronze hourglass), the Expert Rifleman Medal, the Expert Pistol Shot Medal and the Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist pin. SK1(SCW) Cunningham resides in Cumming, Georgia with his wife Victoria.
