Life While growing up, I found myself becoming an idealist. Perhaps surprisingly, I'm still an idealist, but perhaps a rather skeptical and pessimistic one. The "me" of thirty or forty years ago would probably be somewhat surprised at the "me" of present day. My lifepath has veered from science into law; a rather different direction. However I remain very interested in science and scientific advances, although much more jaded about whether science will, in the long run, help create a "better" world. (Whether the world is better depends on personal value judgements. fit.) Professionally, I now do environmental and land use law (with a smattering of electoral law thrown in), representing mostly local and regional environmental and community groups. This is, to say the least, challenging. Our society is tilted towards the profit motive, and the legal system is no exception. I routinely see communities get steamrollered by private companies seeking to make a buck. More often than not, recourse to the legal system gives little relief. I'm also helping to raise two daughters and hopefully instill some idealism in them. So far, I'm pretty proud of how they've turned out.
