Sue's Story
My friends tell me that I always have new random life stories to tell, no matter how many they've already heard. Personally, I think they've just had rather sheltered lives! Anyways, here's one:
When I was visiting Bangkok in 1999, I was leaving a restaurant around midnight to go back to my guesthouse. A very nice young Thai guy came up to me and tried speaking to me in Thai. Well, that's not one of the Asian languages I've learned so he was unsuccessful. Even though he didn't speak English either, he just started walking next to me down the street.
A stranger latching onto me on a dark, deserted road in a foreign country that I didn't speak the language is not my ideal evening, so I tried slowing down to see if maybe he was just coincidentally going my way and would continue on ahead as I fell behind. No such luck! When he noticed I was lagging behind, he very politely stopped and waited for me to catch up. Great, can't just change directions, too obvious, but he was just too weird!
Okay, being the seemingly friendly guy he was, he continued to try to communicate with me as we walked. Resorting to hand gestures, he asked me if I was visiting with friends. Not to smart of me to answer honestly, but I did and told him I was there alone. I really was not expecting what came next, though! I'm still unsure who was supposed to do the paying, but in exchange for 5 Baht, he offered to sleep with me. Yeah, no thanks!! Especially amusing was the fact that the exchange r...Expand for more
ate at the time was roughly 17 Baht to $1, he either didn't think much of his marketable skills or thought I was very desperate!!
Even though I was doing the universal sign for "no" (arms crossed into an X, by the way), he continued to walk with me down the street. The quiet, dark, empty street. What to do now? Well, I tried slowing down again, see if he'd give up and just walk off, but of course he stopped and waited for me to catch up to him again. Such a polite young man, but there was no way I was letting him see where I was staying!
Luckily, we came to a 24 hour convenience store (FamilyMart is apparently ALL over Asia!) and I gestured that I was going inside. Of course, with a big smile on his face, he indicated that he was going to wait out in front for me! Lovely. If you don't already know this, phrase books are completely useless in more situations where they're really, really needed! After 5 minutes of fruitlessly searching my phrasebook in hopes of telling the clerks about this weird guy, two Americans who spoke Thai came into the store. After explaining my situation to them, they translated to the clerk who then went outside and chased off my persistent escort. After that, the remaining few blocks to my guesthouse were uneventful, thankfully!
Lucky me, I attract the weirdos, both abroad and locally! My first summer in Philly was definitely strange, but probably inappropriate for this particular forum! Though, if I'm asked nicely, I may share....! :-)
