Susan Hensley:

CLASS OF 1969

Susan's Story

Life has been exciting since I graduated from Mt. Healthy High School. I stayed in Cincinnati until I was 24. Although I took the required courses to start college right after HS my parents were dead set against my taking out student loans soI went to work. For the first two years I worked at P&G as a secretary. I had an interest in law and worked for Paxton and Seasongood for four years. At 24 I was bored with my job and Cincinnati and still wanted to go to college. I didn't know what I wanted to study so one day in the library I discovered the State Department and the foreign service. They needed foreign service secretaries as well as diplomats. Travelling had always been something I wanted to do so I applied and was hired as a Foreign Service Secretary in January of 1976. It took a full year from the time I applied until I arrived in Washington, D.C. for training. The three years I spent in Bonn, West Germany at the U.S. Embassy were the most exciting of my life Not only did I get to work on presidential visits I got to travel all over Europe relatively cheaply. After three years I did decide to quit and start college. While in Germany I met my future husband, Jim Hensley, who was in charge of the Marine ...Expand for more
security guard detachment at the embassy. Jim and I were marriedin 1980 and divorced in 1989. We have one son, Ben, who is 24 In between I ended up with two degrees - Economics and Finance from Idaho State University and a Masters in Public Administration at Idaho State University. When Jim retired from the Marines they moved us to the location of our choice and we ended up in Idaho because we wanted to ski and Pocatello, Idaho had the schools we wanted to attend. After I finished my undergraduate degree I worked in the banking industry for about 7 years as a commercial loan officer. It was a very stressful job and the pay sucked. When Jim and I divorced I took a year off and went back to school to get my graduate degree. The plan at the time was to go to law school, but the reality of having a 3 year old and the huge amount of debt led me in another direction. For the past 20 years I have worked at the Idaho National Laboratory, one of the Department of Energy's nine R&D laboratories. The INL's research focus is nuclear energy and national security. My primary focus has been either in strategy or finance and budgeting. Although at the moment I am supervising the 5 people who run our project management systems.
