Susan's Story
Life
Since graduation from Meridian, I had two children. Tim was born in 9/71 and Betsy was born in 10/73. I was married to Don Stone from Anna, IL from 1971 until 1976. I moved to Cape Girardeau in 1977 until 1982. Then I lived in East Cape and attended LPN school at Shawnee Community College 1983-1984. In Dec 1984 I relocated to San Antonio, Texas. I was married to Fernando San Miguel III in 1986. We returned to Southern Illinois in 1988 so that I could work on my RN degree again at Shawnee. I graduated in 1989 and moved to Jefferson City, MO. I worked at St Mary's in Jeff City in their CVICU unit. I was divorced in 1992 and later that year I was in a very serious car accident. My hip was broken and so was my heart since the RN I was seeing at the time was driving the car and was killed in the accident. When I recovered in May 1993, I relocated to St Louis, MO and worked for St Luke's in their CVICU unit. On New Year's Eve 1993 I married Raymond Veit, a wonderful man that is 13 years younger than me. We lived in St Charles and I stopped working for a period of time. When I resumed I was a home health nurse for about a year and then returned to nursing through an agency...again doing primarily ICU work. Meanwhile, my kids had been doing great. My son married in 1996 and lives in the Chicago area. They had a son Blake Andrew Stone born on Valentine's Day in 2000. Betsy lived for about five years in St Thomas, USVI and then returned to the states...first Savanah, GA and now Charlotte, NC. She and I took a trip together through Italy in May 2001. She is getting married on August 18, 2007...Expand for more
. I moved to New Orleans in December 2001 and lived with Albert Fischer...my husband since March 2003. He works for Medtronic. We were living in the Uptown area of New Orleans in 2005 when Katrina hit. Our home was flooded in the aftermath and is still gutted and empty. We were evacuated for about 9 weeks before we could return to New Orleans. We love New Orleans but it is very hard to live their right now. We built a new home in Abita Springs, which is about 40 minutes north of New Orleans. I am not working and take care of my husband, our two greyhounds and our small flock of peacocks. I spend a lot of time and energy every day attempting to dig ourselves out of the Katrina pit. My parents are still well and good living just outside of Mounds. Knute is in Marion, JoEllen is in Grand Chain, Marci is in Arlington Heights (Chicago), Jane is in Kentucky, Joannie is in Cairo and Mark is currently in Florida but travels becaues of his work. I have not been to a class reunion since 1996 or so. These days I drive an orange VW beetle convertible and ride a big trike through our neighborhood to exercise myself and our greyhounds. There is a lot about Abita Springs that reminds me of the good days of Mounds. My grandson just spent three weeks here as he does visit us every summer. I wanted to be the cool, eccentric grammie and I think I have accomplished that in spades! I have traveled quite a bit from coast to coast and north to south. I have been to Japan and to Merida, Mexico in the last year. Most the travel is because of my husband's work. If you know me and wish to contact me, please do so.
