Susan's Story

Life My life, to date, has been interesting, albeit unremarkable to most. In reviewing my high school years as a somewhat tortuous journey, I ultimately emerged with a clearer perspective of the things I value most...and the process continues. I attended Brigham Young University, but eventually decided that I was REALLY there for my M.R.S. and that I could learn more on my own. Perhaps unwise in some respects--but, nevertheless, I decided to work, and there I met my husband, Vaughn. Ironically, I learned that he had transferred from Rowland High and played varsity basketball for Covina in 1967 during his senior year. We have been together happily for over 30 years, and he is the best person I know--just ask him! We worked for a major corporation (ugh), and after obtaining his degree, Vaughn was promoted, which brought us to Texas. I was shortly thereafter promoted to manage the on-site outlet toy store which I enjoyed until I retired in 1992. Although we have managed to adjust to a rather unique culture through the years, we continue to miss our home state, long-time friends, and families. Our mutual interests involve a wonderful son--a step-son to me (Jason), an electrician by trade--a musician at heart--in Northern Cal), our pets--currently 1 indoor cat (Pete) who was born blind, 2 awesome border collies, whose intelligence and intuition is uncanny. Our latest addition--an Australian shepherd mix--found injured off a busy highway median on Memorial Day of 2005. She is our little miracle doggie, and we named her Annie--and needless to say--she is bossy and rules the roost. Vaughn and I love to read--me born with book-in-hand. For a while, did some traveling--interesting--but there is no place like home. I also reunited with two of my best friends from high school days--Reggie (Regina) Moravec ('63), and Candy (Candace) Gastlin ('64). And though we lost contact for many years, they are still very dear to me. Personal interests have included church involvement (teaching children), personal improvement, alternative health--with a strong focus on nutrition (organic where possible), alternative modalities, exercise, and attitude...an ongoing endeavor! Also love the "human drama" and anything medical. Am riveted to the "true crime" genre (Ann Rule, Jack Olsen, Gregg Olsen, and Jerry Bledsoe, among others) regarding aspects of the sociopathic or deviant personality; but, above all, am inspired by anything involving the triumph of the human (and animal) spirit, so aptly depicted in the saga of "Seabiscuit," by Hillenbrand. Reading is almost exclusively non-fiction, except for a touch of the classics and poetry... love the power of the pen! NOTE: Although my NOW picture was actually taken when I was 49 (my driver's license picture at that--ha ha)... an update is long overdue. However, I have to leave that one in there to remind me of my "youth"...and will add more if and when I ever get around to it...so don't hold your breath. NOTE: We finally made the big move from Texas to a place surrounded by mountains, water, and beauty--a stark contrast to the vast open flatland of Texas. The people are generally open and friendly, and although we value and miss cherished friends, we stay in contact, and otherwise...we just don't look back. FYI: FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO LOVE ANIMALS...in the year 2000, our then 12-year-old humongous 21-lb. male cat (Junior) became ill with kidney disease--including hydronephrosis (water in both kidneys--an incurable prognosis) as diagnosed by the top veterinary internist in Dallas. He couldn't eat and so I fed him through a tube in his tummy. At the time, although his situation seemed rather bleak (his life expectancy was possibly one year--tops). As a last resort, we were fortunate in being able to find a vet who dealt totally in the realm of alternative medicine (treatment utilizing Applied Kinesiology, herbs, nutrients, etc.), and within a year he was free of the di...Expand for more
sease and is with us today. There has been no recurrence. As such, I hold a firm belief that alternative medicine can and DOES work...if you are able to find someone who is skilled in that area. UPDATE: In 2006 we moved from Texas, and thus lost the high quality alternative care and supplements required for the ongoing health and survival of our cat. However, in 2008, he finally succumbed at the age of 20...8 years longer than we would have had him otherwise. Without the ongoing treatments...the kidney disease later returned and was the cause of his death. Still...we were lucky to have him for so many years. FYI: Most aged cats die of kidney disease. UPDATE: In 2008, Memorial Day, we lost our 3rd beloved 12-year-old border collie, Lucky...less than one month after we lost Junior. He was the cornerstone of our home...our loving and loyal protector. He collapsed on the stairway, was rushed to the emergency vet, and was then unexpectedly diagnosed with lung cancer. Needless to say--we still MISS him. UPDATE: March, 2010 We are members of "Best Friends" a no-kill animal rescue organization (and the very BEST I must add), as located in southern Utah in Kanaab (as there are facilities throughout the country). Two months ago...I happened to see an adorable dog with sad eyes...who had been cruelly abandoned in a shed with ultimately no food or water. She was starving when found, and her tail required partial amputation due to frostbite. Well...to cut to the quick...I fell in love with her online (LuLu--or Lucy)...and knew that I just had to have her. Needless to say...she is now part of the family and she is a little doll. She is part pitbull (reflected in the face and neck), part greyhound (that sleek sculpted bodyline), and Dalmation (the part that makes her so sweet and docile). She loves her new family (people and dogs)and is very friendly and loving to everyone. We would adopt every unwanted animal if we could), but Lulu is perfect for our family, and we love her! UPDATE: JUNE 2011 Sadly and unexpectedly, we lost our precious 12-year-old border collie (our very first dog--which we adopted from a breeder in Texas on January 1st, 2000. He was extremely intelligent (as is typical per the breed), and was very active and loving. He learned everything quickly...and would find clever ways to get exactly what he wanted. He was always friendly...and yet was protective of us. Although, because of his long legs, he began to find it difficult to negotiate the stairs in our home...however, he ultimately succumbed to a sudden serious inflammation of the abdomen just before Memorial Day. We will never forget him. After that sad event, we decided that we should adopt an unwanted dog from the Humane Society. We had already picked him out from the various sites online. As such, he is an adorable border collie mix (trying to find out the other "part" via a so-called new method of determining DNA). Haven't gotten the results yet. However, he is very active and playful (at 2 months), and loves being part of his new family. His name is Willie and he tries to "run the show". So many unwanted animals need good homes and lots of love. Wish we could adopt all of them! PET UPDATE: As of today...we still have Mike (our now 10-year-old red and white border collie--needs to lose a few pounds) and he loves to go EVERYWHERE with us in the car--anytime or anyplace. We also have Lucie (our adorable all-white Pitt mix)...and then there is Willie, our humungous 70-lb. solid black dog with huge straight ears and a very playful and overwhelming personality (NOT a border collie!). Add to that...our 10-year-old black cat Pete...who is my full-time buddy...day and night. LOVE THOSE ANIMALS! NOTE: Sadly, we last Annie last year. She was the sweetest and we miss her. NOTE: Most of our pet losses and gains have taken place on or around Memorial Day for some strange unknown reason... It certainly appears to be symbolical!
