Susan's Story
Life
I married a college classmate who hails from MN. My husband and I own over 50 exotic animals. We have a 12 year old daughter who wants to follow in Mom & Dad's steps.
School
After Freshman year at LS my family moved to Texas where I attended Pearce HS. Culture shock! Everyone had cars at 15 and drove them to school. The parking lot was filled with porches and other high end sports cars. I had a used toyota once I got a license. Although everyone drove to school it was a closed campus, you had to have a hall pass to go to the restroom. No free periods.
College
I attended University of North Texas art school for four years where I studied both commercial graphic art and fine art. Good times, but not exactly the career path I was looking for, so I applied to the then exclusive Exotic Animal Training & Management program at Moorpark College in CA. Once selected I attended from 1988-1990. During that time I interned at Santa Barbara Zoo, Los Angeles Zoo, Hexagon Farms Endangered Cat Breeding Facility and Monkey Jungle in FL. ...Expand for more
I was voted most promising first year student by the second year students and offered a job by the program director upon completion of the program.
Workplace
During high school I had several jobs. During college I worked as a waitress, cocktail waitress, stable hand & vet tech. Although I made good money as a cocktail waitress I decided working with animals was more important to me. After graduating from the Exotic Animal Training & Management program in CA. I returned to Texas in 1990 and started a wildlife education company with my former classmate and husband. Animal Edutainment wildlife education outreach programs present over 600 programs a year. Our animals have been featured on Animal Planet's "Most Extreme" series. We have had the pleasure to work with Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, Jeff Corwin, the Kratt Brothers, Jim Fowler of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom (remember watching that growing up) and consider Jack Hanna a good friend. In 2004 I accepted the position of Zoo Director at the Frank Buck Zoo in Gainesville, Texas.
