Alexandra's Story

I'm home! Well, sort of. You know, some people take to the expatriate lifestyle with gusto. They find another country & settle in. Or they travel from place to place, footloose & fancy free, & absorb the 'exotic'. I enjoyed living in England & traveling around Europe & North Africa. It was thrilling to be surrounded by history, to stumble over the stones of a Roman road on the Yorkshire moors, to stand amidst the menhirs of a Bronze Age stone circle on misty & windswept hill, to have tea where Beau Brummel & the Duchess of Devonshire dined, to waltz across the Piazza San Marco at 4am in the midst of Carnivale... but I was always homesick for America & Americans, mostly just a little, sometimes a lot. Late in 2001, I finally sold my 1850s cottage on the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire, a beautiful rural county in England, & made my way back, across the surface of the planet (5 wks total, much of it on a bulk freighter) to Gulfport, MS (before Katrina -- everything I came to know there is gone now, swept away on that terrific storm surge). Having wintered 2001-02 (& then some) in Mississippi on the Gulf Coast, enjoying the comparatively mild climate at that time of year, as the tempera...Expand for more
tures climbed with summer, I bought an RV & set out to tour America in July 2002. Breakdowns & mishaps cut the distance & time I had meant to spend short, but I did a good 6000 miles anyway. Didn't find the "perfect place" to resettle that I was looking for, but who ever does? Spent 8 (or was it NINE??) months in Sacramento, CA, but the heat (114 in the shade) & toxic air drove me out to Fort Bragg on the Mendocino Coast. Been here since Aug 03 (Wow! 7 & 1/2 yrs now!). Natural air conditioning & no smog, no crowds, & spectacular scenery are the draws here. (The closest Wal-Mart is an hour & a half away, but there is a Starbucks.) And the opportunity to sing a lot: the Mendocino Women's Choir & the chorus for the Mendocino Music Festival (we're doing Mozart's Grand Mass in C Minor this summer 2011). His Requiem was such a glorious rush 2 yrs ago, we couldn't resist doing more Mozart), a local opera company, musical theatre, all sorts of opportunities. Love to hear from someone... Email? You can reach me at alex at demi-geekette dot com. (If you want to get in touch, it's the best way as I have to PAY classmates to see who signed my Guest book & times are hard. ;) Mwahs! Alex
