Susan's Story
In school, I was probably obnoxious... due to the difficult home life I endured. I was told that I was adopted at age six but later discovered I was living a lie. I was not adopted until I was sixteen--and used the name Moran when I should have been Susan Lansbury. Nothing was done to protect me--it was all done to hide my mother's secrets. Growing up in that house was difficult.
In any case, I had a series of difficult and unsuccessful relationships --spent three years in the US Navy as a photojournalist, stationed at Pearl Harbor. I finally settled down when I married Ronald L. Chisum, USN and we had a family. Then they found the cancer in his military retirement physical. He never retired. I was widowed with four children, ages one to nine. Two were still in diapers! After that. . . I decided to define myself with education--something I had been told growing up that I would not need, althoug...Expand for more
h I already had an Associates degree in liberal arts which I did after I got out of the Navy. I went back to school and eventually received my BA in English, a BA in Education, and an MA in English. I was a high school teacher for a while--then taught college both in the classroom and online--before finding a job on a Native American Indian reservation teaching adults. I am the Adult Basic Education instructor and "Jill-of-all-trades" meeting the needs when ever I can. I teach college classes as adjunct to my Native students. I love my job.
I have five grown children, a significant other, and live in New Mexico.
My mother & step-father are still alive, living in Minnesota. We are not close. My hobbies are sewing, decorating, refinishing old furniture, cooking [I wrote a cookbook!] and READING. I am a 19th-C British Victorian literature major who now reads & teaches Native American literature.
