Susan's Story

Life After high school and art school I worked as a commercial artist in the Boston area. In 1969 I met and married(11/16/69)my hubby Sheldon. I "burned the midnight oil" freelancing from home while raising our three great kids: Joanne Belinda(12/70) who's an Occupational Therapist in a public school system outside of Boston, Rory Joel(12/73) who's in Hotel Management in Chicago, and Rachel Joy(4/76)/ who's a Pediatric Unit Coordinator at a large Boston hospital. Our two younger kids presented us with our first grandchildren, Maya Rose in 2007 and Amelia Grace in 2009, and our oldest Joanne finally got married this past August 21st, 2010 after a two-year engagement. The wedding was out in the countryside of Athol, MA, followed by the reception held in a beautiful medieval tent where a grand buffet fed the 140-150 guests, and a live band played while people danced away the hours until midnight. They honeymooned in Nassau, Grand Bahama and returned home to reside in Newton, MA. After 30 years as renters, we finally purchased our own home in 1999 on the Lynn-Salem line. We resided in Winthrop for 24 years and the Berkshires for 5. Unfortunately, unlike us always living in a 7 1/2 to 8-room apartment when we rented, our own first-floor apartment of the 3-family house we own has only 5 rooms and about half our belongings are still packed in boxes in the basement. Our house was built somewhere between 1899 and 1901, since different old city documents don't "jive" on the same date, so the basement cannot be renovated to accommodate additional rooms. Oh well, it's OUR home sweet home! My husband is a first cook for a nursing home in Rockport, MA. He left the restaurant business in 1979 (at it since age 14) as a manager of Ken's at Copley, which most of you probably remember in Copley Square. He took his first nursing home job as assistant in a kitchen at a nursing home in Winthrop and has been in that field since then. Having moved up to the position of "Food Seervice Director" of both kitchen and diningroom facilities about twelve years ago, he became disillusioned and tired of dealing with "corporate aggravation and B.S. So after 6 years at his current place of employment, he's now "first cook" preparing meals for the residents, loves it and they love his cookin!, While not presently working, I keep busy w/family, friends, the house, gardening, and my passion and main interest, folkmusic, attending local gigs, concerts and festivals. My number one interest right now is taking care of Rachel's daughter Maya Rose on the days she's not in day care, and I love it! She's petite, adorable, bright and so animated. Others interests are oldies music, the arts, writing, occasional reading, the computer, bike riding, walking, raising money for a diabetes cure at the ADA's Boston walk every year. I hope one day to return to college to finish getting a degree in the arts field. I look forward to our next class reunion, to seeing former classmates and old friends, and exchanging stories. A few accidents along the way kept me from goi...Expand for more
ng forward with my life-long dreams of having my own art studio and working as long as I can. After leaving a secretarial position for a large national theater chain, I went on a job interview in Boston and walked off the edge of a very high doorway that should have had a couple of steps, and landed on my lower spine, fracturing three vertebrae in that area. It took me a year to recover. Six years later I was shopping for two weddings gowns for our two younger kids who were having weddings within three months of each other. Well, I managed to purchase the gown for one wedding, but while shopping for the second, managed to fall into a construction hole not properly cordoned off from where customers were. My luck, it was a pile of hangers under the clothes rack that couldn't be seen from above, that caught my feet and catapulted me backwards into the hole, and three more vertebrae were fractured and another year or so more to recover put a hault to normalcy in my life. I STILL managed to go to both weddings, though, one of which was in Florida. And finally, hopefully the last accident, occurred just almost a year ago last May 21s, 2010 at a north shore mall. After some brief shopping I was walking towards the exit to go home. From out of nowhere a motorized wheelchair knocked me sideways to the hard cement floor of the mall breaking my right femur (thigh bone). A great surgeon, a month of rehab at Spaulding Rehab in Boston got me healed enough to walk our oldest daughter Joanne down the aisle with her Dad at her wedding in August, three months to the day after the accident happened. NOW, eleven months after that incident (4/2011), approaching the one year anniversary of it, I am back to normal and enjoying life to the fullest again, NO HOLDS BARRED! School I attended elementary schools, the David A. Ellis(K-3) and Henry Lee Higginson(3-6) in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Junior high school was scattered between Girls'Latin School in Dorchester, MA (1st half of 7th) and the Solomon Lewenberg in Mattapan, MA (2nd half of 7th), and ended up at RHS for the 8th grade through my high school years. I attended Vesper George School of Art from 1963-1966, studied fashion and commercial art, and received my diploma in May, 1966. I've also taken adult ed courses at Winthrop High School for creative writing, vocal training, and the arts, and attended Newbury College's Revere Satellite Campus for 3 years taking courses towards an Associates Degree in Business Management and Administration. I always wanted to be a famous when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a daydreamer idea. As it turns out, they were wrong, because in my own inimitable way, I am famous. Go ahead and look at my photo album and see lucky me with some of the really greats of the folkmusic scene. I love it! My favorite way to relax after a long week is to go to a folk concert or local coffeehouse to see a favorite folk performer. If I don't get there for one weekend, I just turn on my favorite folk station WUMB 91.9 FM Folk Radio, Boston and listen.
