Susan's Story

I was one of those classmates that moved in and back out again. The longest time I lived anyplace was in Atlanta from 1960 until December 1966. I attended one year at Briarcliff Elementary, four at Hawthorne (where most of my memory of people is), one at Lakeside High but being bussed to Briarcliff High because the buidling at Lakeside was not complete, and then one semester in the fall of '66 at Lakeside going in the mornings on a split-shift because the building wasn't complete. I think that says something about not remembering much about Lakeside. I completed two years at Richmond Academy in August (nothing fancy - that was the name of the public high school) and moved to Louisville, KY for my senior year. Fortunately by that time I had the good sense to JOIN something and had a fun year with the drama/theatre folks. I kept book for "Thousand Clowns" and was the actual stage manager (not the character) in "Our Town." We won city competion with a one-act play written by the father of the teacher, and competed at the state level in Lexington. I think we came in third. One of the students became a news anchor in Chicago and that's all I know about that. I went to college and then kept finding graduate schools to let me in and take classes. I eventually found my niche working with patient counseling and worked at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC from 1982 - 84 and again from 1988 through 1999 when I took a more challenging postiion in Houston. Along the way I married a minister and we began to rescue dogs. We've c...Expand for more
ared for quite a bunch and now have only four: two border collies, a black lab and a terrier mix. We have competed in Flyball since 1993 which opened a whole new world of interesting people and competition and training and laughing. Check out Flyball.com to see what our hobby is. At present I am back in grad school, finishing up a (third) masters in counseling. I wanted something portable (we will NOT retire in Houston) that I could do part time in retirement years. My family is all in central North Carolina and my husband is from Virginia, so I'd say the liklihood of returning to the piedmont area is pretty high. We hike every year (as long as we are able) in the Smoky Mountains; I think we'd both love to spend more time outdoors in the Pacific Northwest, and we'd love to find a convenient (ha!) place to snorkel. Given our love of trees, mountains and clear water, Houston is an odd place to be living, but there is a great spirit here, and a lot of things to do from October through mid-July. Mid-July through September is like living in a sauna. I just joined this website on 8/03/08; my husband had such a good time at his high school reunion it set me to thinking that there MIGHT be a chance to connect with someone from those years by way of remembering the grade school years. I have very much enjoyed the interchanges that ocurred almost immediately, and invite any comments or recollections. I have been so curious about what happened to the people I remember, and have found that a little memory leads to more and more recollection.
