Susan's Story

Hello Everyone, Once graduating from St. Leonard's, I attended the University Hospital of Nursing for only one year. I thought at that time that was not what I wanted to do. That following few months, I did research for my dad, James E. Nixon M.D. and then attended the Community College of Phila.got a degree and worked at Strawbridges in the payroll department, just to mention this one job. I took the Philadelphia Police test but had to wait for a year for the results to be accepted after rigged physical tests. That was when women were accepted in patrol, (male only position), the only female position was the truant/juvenile officers position. I got engaged and then accepted into the police department after four discrimination court stays were thrown out in the year 1979. I married a police officer, went through the academy, worked as the only female officer for about three years with my all male squad where I was assigned in South Philly. I had my daughter, 1984, after five years on the police force and got separted/divorced two years later. I have raised my daughter as a single parent until now. Through shifts, transfers and moving onto retiring from the force, I went from the street (patrol), police cruiser/wagon/beat, working inside the district, processing reports, cell block, criminal records, doing statistics, a training officer, crime scene t...Expand for more
ech., being a captain's aide, computer techonogist, to radio/communications repair technogolist to name a few. I have been assigned in South Philly, North Philly, East Division/Kensington (Bad Land area) and ended at the Round House (Police Admin. Bld.) Then I retired in 2006. I applied for a job at the Delaware River Port Authority as a Police Dispatcher where I work presently on the Walt Whitman Bridge doing several different duties not all associated with dispatching. I presently handle two bridges, the Walt Whitman and the Commodore Barry Bridges which is hectic. I live in New Jersey in the Marlton, Evesham Twp. My daughter just got married this last June and now I am on my own for now. My mother, 89, is still living and still lives in Philadelphia in the same house as I did in high school. My father died in 2003. My four brothers and four sisters are still living and are scattered all over between New Mexico, Texas, New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia. Some are married with children and some are not. Besides being older, some work injuries: broken bones, scars, knee surgeries and with wear and tear I am still standing. Glad to say. Looking forward to the next chapter in my life. The above picture is when Monica and "Mel" (Margaret) with our daughters behind us met this last spring. I am looking forward to the class reunion next year.
