Susan's Story

Life I married in January 1969, and divorced after 22 years of marriage. I married again in July 1991 and have been married30 years. I cared for my mother-in-law for 7-1/2 years before she passed away of Alzheimer's in August 2004. I cared for my mother from June 2002 until February 2009. She also had late stage Alzheimer's and was an invalid. It was the hardest and most rewarding/heartbreaking task you can ever imagine. Mom passed away on February 14, 2009, at 7:29 a.m. I miss her very much. On a brighter note, I get to be Grandma and Oma Susie the easy way. My husband's daughter has four children, ages 29 to 18 yrs. They give us great pleasure. My husband also has a grown son with an fifteen year old grandson. My father passed away in 1988 of colon cancer. He was a retired Army Colonel. He was also a retired Professor of English at Georgia Tech. We live in the country on 11 acres with our dog Baillie! Our main hobby for a long time has been to finish our dream home. It's a work in progress, and still is as of the fall of 2021, I also enjoy genealogy, and traveling (at least it was before (COVID). My husband is from upstate New York on the Canadian border (St, Lawrence River) - beautiful but COLD! He retired July 2005. He is also retired military. n Germany. There, after much research I received enough material to find my birth family!!!! After finding not only family in Germany I also have cousins here in the USA. After making contact with my cousin, I was informed I have a brother!!!! After much research and angst, on January 1, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. I got a call from my brother. Of course, there are many more exciting details than can be added in this venue, but now I have a brother, and we met July 23, 2012!!!!! So my life's quest is now over and I am completely happy. In 2013 from July 23 - August 31, I spent five weeks in Germany with my precious brother. He is one of the finest men I have ever known. He treated me like a queen! He lives in the state of Bavaria, and we explored most of it during my visits. How grand it is to have your very own family. It has truly filled a huge hole in my heart!!! And it healed my heart failure. “You don’t have peace until you’ve found all the pieces” In 2014 I spent seven weeks in Europe enjoying a visit with my brother and also a week exploring Paris, Brussels, and Luxembourg with my husband. Brussels was my favorite. The rest of my visit was with my brother as my husband returned home to hold down the fort. My brother and I did some family history research and had a grand time together. I love Germany. It really feels like home to me! 2016, was the summer from hell. On my way to visit my brother, I received a call from his nephew saying my brother was in the hospital and to come immediately. That was August 1. Sorry to say he passed away on August 16. I am so thankful to have been with him, holding his hand when he passed. For the rest of my life I will have a huge hole in my heart. At least I had 4-1/2 wonderful years with him!!! He was a dear brother. The best brother a girl could have!!! I also have found my brother's two children in The Netherlands. They have welcomed me with open arms. Well, more news! I have found my birth father's side of my family. I have 6 half siblings. Three have already passed. I am in touch on a regular basis with one of my nieces and nephews. We are enjoying a long distance friendship until COVID calms down.
