Susan's Story

Life I've spent a lot of time in school. Of the last 10 years, I've spent 7 of them in college. Knowledge is power and all that jazz. Most of my career education, though, came on the job....or the *jobs*, as the case may be. I worked off and on through school in Cleveland and settled for a couple of years in Knoxville with Rivr Media. Of course, it didn't hurt any that I met my hubby on the job. We got married in February 2004 after a whirlwind 11 months. Currently, he's working on the technological side of production (as opposed to the non-technological side?), and I just picked up my first Emmy for editing a project I cut on our dining room table while my mother babysat my little girl in the next room. To say life is blessed would be a gross understatement. School The scant amount of hits on my bio tells you how unpopular I was in high school. Fortunately, life goes on. College From the hot halls of Cleveland High to the humungous hills of Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. Well, there were the haunted halls of Maryville College first, which I still consider my true alma mater. But Wellington was where I found, or rather got the courage to turn toward, my purposed direction. It's hard not to muster courage when you have to walk through the Red Light District of a nation's capital every day on the way to class.... :) From there to Cleveland State (back down the food chain in a major way, I realize, but it was the best thing I did for my education and career path) and then on to UTK. Piece of unsolicited advice: Don't believe profs and advisors who tell you UTK has a production program. They LIE! Still, UTK wasn't a mistake. Finally, after six years and...Expand for more
four colleges, UTK finally decided to give in and award me a B.S. (more fitting letters were never assigned to a degree) in Communications. With 190 credit hours (look at that list of majors! talk about indecisive!), the advising department worked miracles to get all of my needed credits plugged in - they just wanted rid of me. So what did I do? I took 3 years off to work, then I decided I wanted to go *back* to school. I'll be attending Winthrop University beginning this fall to work toward an English degree and my lifelong dream of being a writer. Workplace I started off at the local TV station in Cleveland. What? Of *course* Cleveland has a TV station. You mean you've never heard of it? Ha. You're not the only one. Because no one had heard of the station, it went under. In a desperate attempt to find a job and get myself out of my mother's house, I literally stumbled upon my dream job. I botched the interview in a major way, but called back a couple of days later to ask for a second chance. What I got, instead, was a job offer wondering if I could start in 18 hours. Cue majorly rushed move to Knoxville. I worked there for nearly two years before marrying one of my co-workers. I left before I was really ready. I loved the people I worked with and what I did, but guess what? The girl who always wanted to be in the TV business...has done it and is taking some time off. After transitioning from being production coordinator and ad hoc production manager to being a full-time editor, working on shows for DIY and the Food Network, I'm on my own now - working from home in the Carolinas cutting documentaries when something good comes my way. Tis an absolute dream come true.
