Susan's Story
Life
I have 3 kids. Keith, lindsay, and Sarah. Keith is 27,and works for Hospice of The National Capital Area. They have promised him an IT position, but he is still waiting. He commutes from here--it's a long day. Lindsay is 25 and graduated from Virginia Tech with a Master's Degree and is teaching LD here in Frederick County, Virginia. Sarah is 20 and attending Radford. She started as a music major, but now has NO clue! This is her second year, so we will see what happens. I gave up nursing 25 years ago to raise my kids. We moved from Springfield Va. to Winchester,Va. 10 years ago. Wanted to be in the country near mountains and lots of COWS! Life is a little slower here and less hectic.
I guess the newest thing to happen is that I took an RN refresher class through Shenandoah University. I was hired by Winchester Medical Center in January. I am working with a preceptor for 12 weeks. It is really difficult trying to start over. I still like taking care of patients, so guess I will keep going 'til they throw me out!
As an update,Winchester Medical Center told me at the end of 12 weeks, that I was...Expand for more
n't going fast enough, so they transferred me to Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal, Virginia. I worked on a Sub-acute Rehab unit for 6 weeks---26 days of orientation. They called me in to tell me I had to be able to take the unit alone or they couldn't justify keeping me on orientation. It cost them too much money. I didn't want to give up, so I asked if I could be a nurse's aide. The same problem exists ----one nurse and one aide per shift for 11 patients-4 of them are nursing home patients--2 complete care. Since I can't lift them by myself, I decided to quit.I don't know what I am going to do next. I think I know why there is a nursing shortage. Update April 2004---I am looking into Hospice nursing and a doctor's office. Mostly just bumming around! I sing in a barbershop quartet that sings for senior citizen centers and luncheons during the day. They love us and we love them! I am also learning how to paint with colored pencils! Update--It's 2006--I am still singing with my quartet and Sweet Adelines group, I am doing some colored pencil paintings for a possible craft fair in the spring, and selling dolls on Ebay!
