Susan's Story

Life Wow. God has a sense of humor. If you asked me in high school or college where I would be now, I would have told you either CEO of some Fortune 500 company or very close to getting there. If you had told me I would have six children, been married 17 years, quit my job to homeschool my children I would have told you that you had me confused with someone else. And if you had told me that on Valentine's Day that I would have become a widow I wouldn't have believed you. I was a software developer for many years consulting for people like The Associates, Arco, Citibank, Sprint, Texas Instruments etc. I loved my job, made good money and never considered not working. My husband and I were on assignment for seven months on the French Riveria during the wonderful spring and summer. It was amazing. After we returned home and my husband took a job in Connecticut I quit working to stay home with our 3 year old son. At first I was nuts. What are you supposed to DO all day when you stay home? When he turned 4, I started homeschooling him because he appeared to be very gifted in math and we couldn't get him into any public or private schools because of their strange rules. Apparently if you lose your teeth they will let you into school early or if you can jump rope really well. But if you can already add and subtract and write they don't consider you for early entry. So by a fluke we started homeschooling and wound up in this strange and different community of homeschoolers. We watched and learned and realized that society as we knew it and school really wasn't God's plan for us. After 10 years we now have six children, three boys and t...Expand for more
hree girls ranging in age from almost 14 years to 8 months. It has been a wild ride. My husband looks at our kids and wonders how or why we have six children. Sometimes our life is hectic and crazy but we couldn't imagine it not being this way. Life would be so boring with only one or two children. My children have taught me so much. Garrett, our oldest, is strong and determined. He's going to be a great man in the very near future. Jeremy, is sweet and wants to save the world. He's been reading since his 4th birthday. He was reading the Encyclopedia since he was 4! By the time he's in high school, I'm not sure what there will be left to teach him. Lindsay is sweet and loving. Her first thoughts are always of others. She goes through the store telling women they are pretty whether old, young, beautiful or plain, she tells them they are pretty. Jennifer is tiny but spirited. She knows who she is and what she is and no one will ever convince her otherwise. Both Lindsay and Jennifer tell everyone about Jesus, God and their church. Matthew is a bundle of energy. There is no stopping him. We can't wait to see what he will do in a few years. Mary Emma is a delight. All of our babies were good babies but she is the best. She loves to laugh and is always happy. With six children we don't have time for much else in our lives. We are active in Gateway Church and we give back to our church through marriage mentoring. On Valentine's Day 2008 my husband took his own life leaving me a widow and mother to our six children. It's been a very adventuresome time since then. But...Life is good. Not at all what I thought it would be.
