Susan's Story
Life
Updated In Dec. 2011: We are officially an entire black belt family. Our daughter just tested for her first-degree black belt at the same time our son, Jason, tested for his second and we tested for our third. We were all successful! Our niece and nephew are also now black belts.
Updated in Dec. 2008: Well, just tested for my second-degree black belt alongside my husband and my son (Jason was testing for his first-degree black belt) and passed! I'm so proud of our son (and my husband!) for his determination. It was a long, hard road with countless hours of training, running, and other things (kind of like our first-degree black belt test as mentioned below). Everyone is doing well! Keep in touch y'all!
Updated in 2006:Hi, everybody! My life has changed a lot recently. My husband and I tested for our black belts in Kajukenbo (a form of martial arts) in June 2006 and succeeded...it was even more difficult than giving birth, I have to say (6 mile run, front kicks, turning back kicks, crab walk, duck walk and bear walk up and down the length of two football fields (each!)...all in a space of 4 hours...then back to the dojo for the test of all we'd learned during our training...I can't even talk about the night before all of this...but you can imagine!). I've lost 60 lbs and feel better than I ever did in high school (except for these old joints...). My two kids are amazing and never cease to surprise me with new things every day. Keep in touch everyone! I'm forgetting a lot of high school days and need reminding! - Susan Thurmond Tse
College
Best part of college didn't really take place at UCA...it was driving to Memphis in Jody's Mustang and hanging out there all night on Beale Street or with Steve in his dorm room up there and then driving back (like...2 hours or so?) just in time for class the next day. That's my strongest memory.
Freakiest roommate: That had to be Jennifer Holliday...that girl was a freak to the max and was never afraid to show it!
Freakiest moment: When Kevin, Joy, Eric, and I were hanging...Expand for more
out at Waffle House in the middle of the night and some dude came over and kissed my knee and Eric threw him across the room (by the way, thanks Eric!). Joy called the police and we made a statement and everything. I have to admit that the practical joke we played on Eric after that (calling him and pretending that the guy he threw was suing him) was something I'll never forget...I don't know if Eric's forgiven us for that one yet...
Best teacher: I remember his first name was Terry...can't remember his last name for the life of me...He was my "Intro to Poetry" teacher and then the other poetry class (I can't remember the name of it) where we all sat around a table and shared and critiqued our own poetry...those were some of the best class times. I also liked Dr. Lammers, Dr. Frontaine and my Archery coach (can't remember her name). Also, Dr. Patricia McGraw, my Rhetoric teacher, who let me do an ad for a condom store for one of my projects (If you have common sense, come to Condom Sense, the great little store full of laughs! If you don't come for yourself, come for a friend! They've got everything from rubber trees to camo-condoms "Never let 'em see you comin'!"). Thanks Dr. McGraw!
Favorite class: It's a toss-up between Poetry, Rhetoric, and Bible as Literature
Least favorite class: also a toss-up between Calculus II (Dr. Kilman) and Abstract Algebra (don't remember the teacher's name)...what a NIGHTMARE those classes were!
Workplace
Worked as a telemarketer, a PBX Operator in a funeral home and in a hotel. I finally found my niche as a Reservations Agent in one of the most famous hotels in California: The Mark Hopkins Inter-Continental Hotel. Now I'm working for the Hilton in Concord, CA. The commute to SF got to be too much when we moved to Antioch.
Update in 2011: I am now the Group Rooms Coordinator for the Hilton Concord & enjoying every minute of it!
Achievements at the Hilton Concord: Employee of the Month 4 times, quarterly Customer Service Award 3 times, CARE Committee, and Employee of the Year twice!
