Suzanne's Story
Life
The day after graduation I started work for Continental Airlines as a Ramper (I load and unload aircraft). I had retinal surgery in the summer of 97, my mother had ovarian cancer in the fall of 97 and I moved out of the house in December of 97. Busy year! I got married to Paul M. Vana III Nov. 7, 1998. I still read a lot but since being married have been introduced to a wide variety of music which I enjoy. I've cut my long hair REALLY short. I have two children (Maeve DOB 2/6/05 & Camden ETA May/June 06) and have two Cocker Spaniels. Sophie (red/wt) and Hyde (b/wt/t). Paul and I moved to Kingwood, Texas (top of Houston) in February of 2004 but came back to Ohio November of 2005. Texas ROCKS! I celebrate my 10yr anniversary June 15th with Continental Airlines!
School
Academic Challenge, National Honor Society, Vocational-Technical National Honor Society, Peer Mediation in JVS were just about all my extracurricular activities. I hated math then but strangely I excelled in Accounting in 10th grade. I liked English class but not the grammar part, but relished in the science classes, with the exception of physical science since it had so much math in it. I still think Mr. Cavanaugh liked me despite my inability to do the chemical equations. I was one of the "good kids" so in high school I got away with murder (quietly). It's amazing what you can get away with when you're considered well by the teachers. Of the 20 in my Vocational classes, I was NOT one of the girls to get pregnant, found out one of my classmates from another school district was dating a friend whom I hadn't seen since Miss Meo's fourth grade class. Wild. I liked my high school years depite going through bouts of severe depression and several attempted suicides (it was home that was the proble...Expand for more
m). But I got help in 11th grade and have been rocking ever since!
College
To be perfectly honest, I took two quarters of Psychology. I had Jennifer Karwatski in my first quarter. Saw Brent Tuma in the halls at LCCC during my second quarter. By then I was graduating from High School (I was doing high school, working PT AND going to college in my senior year). I applied for the LPN course at LCCC and they said, "thank you, we'll call you in four years when there is an opening."
They did too!!! Four years later! By then I had been at the airlines for the same amount of time and I said, "thanks, but you are three and a half years too late." So much for being a nurse!!
Workplace
I was hired June 5, 1996--the day after graduation--as a Customer Service Agent at Continental Airlines. I don't know why they call it that since I have nothing to do with the customer, but everything with their luggage. I load and unload inbound aircraft which usually has about two tons (4000lbs) of luggage to remove by hand. My back and knees are still intact, but I've got arthritis in my hands. Winter outside isn't that bad, it's all about dressing in layers. I've broken teeth, dislocated my shoulder, strained and sprained just about everything, have had a detached retina and rebroke my tailbone out there. (I initially broke it in 10th grade slipping on ice taking the dog out.) Despite all the above over the years since 1996, I still love my job. Summer, when everyone is stuck indoors, I'm outside getting a fab farmer's tan, watching birds of prey terrorize the pigeons, spy rainbows out, and the most amazing sunsets. Wouldn't trade my job for an indoor job at any point. Now being in Texas is great, although I have yet to go through a Texas Summer--yes; everything is bigger in TX!
