Suzanne's Story

My life so far has had many, many ups and downs and nothing has turned out as I would have expected it to -- and yet I don't think I would change a single moment of it if given the chance. The thing that has surprised me the most is how God has sustained me through it all. I guess He has known all along what has been best for me and has accomplished His purposes in my life despite my kicking and screaming and arguing to the contrary. Back in 1980 I realized what a mess I had made of my life and decided to surrender it all and stop fighting this God who persistently loved me in spite of my failures. It was the best decision I ever made. I have had more moments of pure joy than anyone should ever be entitled to in this lifetime. Here are a few brief snapshots: I became a widow at 22 and almost gave up on life. I decided to hold on for the sake of my daughter and have lived to see her grow into an amazing woman -- unique, beautiful, unbelievably talented, with a heart that makes me very proud to have been chosen to be her Mom. I've made many mistakes. Some of the men I chose to have relationships with were abusive and I suffered greatly for it. When I had finally given up and resigned myself to being single, a very kind man became my...Expand for more
best friend. He is still my best friend today. He is also my husband and I am thankful for his love everyday. I watched as my middle step-son almost destroyed his life and cried when he refused to speak to us when he was incarcerated. That same young man is now drug-free, married to an incredible woman, active in his men's group at church -- and has given us two precious grandchildren. I have jumped out of airplanes, got lost cross-country skiing at midnight, got over my fear of deep water by snorkeling in Cancun, worked with young missionaries and swam with sea turtles in Barbados, cried at the Arizona memorial in Hawaii, watched my nephew join the Marine Corps and go to war in Iraq, fished the Colorado River at sunset, stood breathless at the majesty of the Grand Canyon -- and rocked my baby to sleep in a dingy apartment. It has been a life of contrasts, of ups and downs, and I wouldn't trade any of it. I walked into a women's prison camp and shared all of the worst moments of my life so that I could tell them there is always hope. There is a God who loves them enough to forgive them for whatever they have done. A God who will dry their tears and give them a new life. He did it for me. He is waiting to do it for you. Let Him.
