Sylvia's Story

After graduating from Lauderdale High I went to Western Michigan Uni. for one year.I then transferred to Florida State and majored in Elem. Ed. Graduated in '55 & went to New Jersey to teach 3rd Gr. Met and married a career Army man, taught outside Ft.Ritchie,Md. until we were shipped to Japan for 6 yrs. Have had 3 fabulous children, who were everything in school that I wasn't, smart, talented, Capt.of their sports teams & good looking. They all graduated from high school and college with honors. Upon returning from the Far East we were stationed at Ft. Sheridan,Ill. Having 29 yrs. in we retired and moved to Mundelein,Ill. I taught 1st, 2nd & 3rd grades wherever we were stationed and retired with 31 yrs. in 1991. I moved to Florida for 16 years. I couldn't take the heat and the bugs anymore, so, I bought a cute little house in the Western North Carolina mountains and I love it here! I love to oil paint, crochet, read and keep up with my friends. I also keep in touch with the teachers I taught with and with several of my students. in NYC. My son, Paul, has been Head Tennis Coach at West Point for ten years and garnered "Coach of Year" for the Patriot League several times. My beloved son, Gregory, lost his life to multiple myeloma at age 41. I have 7 grandchildren; 3 boys and 4 girls in Colorado Springs, Louisville, West Point & NYC. How blessed can one person be?!!! My father owned the Pippin Sightseeing Boat business in Ft. Lauderdale. I worked in the ticket booth and on the boat doing the spiel. Once in a while the Seminole Indian alligator wrestler wouldn't show up to do the show. My Dad would say, "Okay, Sylvia Ann, get in there and get the little gator". I had watched the Indian wrestlers since I was little so I knew how to do some of the tricks but I didn't put my head in the gator's mouth! I told the students I had this story over the years. And of course, they went home and told their parents. At one of my parent-teacher conferences a parent was sure I had been telling the children wild stories and wanted me to recant my statement. I had a heck of a time convincing them that it was a true story!
