Tania's Story

Life After graduating, I went to Northwestern Univ in Chicago, where I graduated with a BSc Biomedical Engineering. Since that time, I've moved to San Francisco (87-96), where I met my husband, a university professor (not my professor, mind you). He convinced me to move to his native South Africa where we lived (in stunning Cape Town) for 11 years (1996-2007). I now have two beautiful boys: Alexander (born 2001) and Gordon (born 2006). In August 2007 we moved to Boston where my husband is on sabbatical at Harvard School of Public Health. I'm a stay-at-home mom for the first time and finding it at least as challenging as working. life! Living in South Africa has been an invaluable experience and it taught me many things, not least the beauty of properly formed sarcasm and a greatly increased ability to laugh at myself. In Africa I have benefitted greatly from some of the cultural differences, in particular the beautiful form of business interactions that focus first on the individual and then on the business at hand. This invaluable lesson (and the long path I walked to attain it) will stay with me forever. I am, nevertheless, glad to be back in the USA where I am considered to have an exotic accent (although I can't hear it) and am frequently caught saying to-mah-toe and petrol. I am anxious to see where life takes me next!
