Ted's Story
Life
I was born on a farm in Stockton, Missouri April 16, 1954. I lived in Stockton until November 4, 1963, when we moved to Broadway-Valentine District in Kansas City MO. We then moved to Independence, MO in June 1964, where I finished the remainder of my pre-college education.
I love sports and played almost daily during pre-college years. I was a singer and/or a guitarist in several garage bands and did various jobs for seven years, from '72 to '79, hoping to find some musicians that were not so ego-maniacal that we could do some creative musical work. Having no luck, I enrolled in college in March 1979.
In August 1979 I became a freshman at Park College (now Park University) in Parkville, MO. Originally I wanted to attend MU or SMSU. Nevertheless, when I visited Park, I fell in love with the campus and my choice was made.
I attended Park 5 yrs because my major was music two years, then I changed to Elementary Education during my third year.
My college years were very special to me. They shaped who I became and who I am today. I was very involved in student life, was an academic scholar a few semesters, was selected for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1983-84, and was a varsity cross-country and track athlete for three years. I was involved in religious life, and a member of the college newspaper staff.
Upon graduation I moved back to Independence. I began playing music in bands again and got a job as an elementary classroom teacher in the fall of 1984. I worked for KC Schools and some bands (one really good band based in Lawrence KS) until June 1988 at which time I took a year off.
I got married in October 1990 and moved ...Expand for more
to South Missouri. I taught middle school at Nevada Missouri in 1990-91 and was a 7th/8th grade boys'/girls' track coach. We lived in South Missouri two years, then moved back to Kansas City in '92. I continued to play music and substitute teach until 1995, at which time I had become burned-out on both teaching and playing music.
My ex-wife and I divorced in 1996 due to 'religious differences'. We remain friends.
I joined a temp agency and spent three years catching up on the computer age. And, in 1990 -- having always been a rather literate person -- I also began writing for various publications. So, I worked in business and journalism until November 2000.
In October 1978, I had contracted what was then known as Non-A/Non-B Hepatitis -- I think while working in the surgery unit of what is now Independence Missouri Regional Health Center. I do not know.
I experienced liver failure in mid-October 2000 my liver failed. I lost all my possessions and went to live at my sister's, basically starting over. I got on the KU Med Ctr Liver transplant list on Groundhog's Day, 2002; and had my liver transplant on Halloween Day, 2002.
I completed a course in Accounting at Penn Valley Community College in December 2006, receiving a certificate as Accounting Clerk.
I worked at Kansas City Free Health Clinic in Midtown, Kansas City, MO until I moved to Palm Springs, California in September 2008.
I worked a couple of jobs and free-lanced for a year and a half. I worked with Riverside County Office On Aging's Title V Senior Employment Program for four years, and recently moved back to Independence, Missouri after my father passed away to be closer to my family.
