Ted's Story

Life I've been in California since 1967 and haven't visited Hawaii nearly enough. I retired in 2002. I flew to Maui on 5/14/08 to check it out and see if I could live there. I found Maui way too slow for me and have abandoned plans to move there. I have become urbanized. Look me up on Myspace by doing an e-mail search for dragon-lair at msn dot com User name: Tsunami. In May 2009, I visited KAUAI with my girlfriend. We had a good time for 9 days in Kauai. I'm beginning to think that I have this thing about going back to my roots in May, my birthday month. I am pretty active physically for a senior. I work out at the gym three days a week. I also play tennis at least twice a week and sometimes play tennis for two hours and then go to the gym for another hour. Another pastime I like is to occasionally walk around Miramar Lake her in San Diego. It is a 5-mile walk around the lake. My ritual is to walk the lake only in a pair of shorts, no shirt, rubbed down in tanning lotion and earphones plugged into my ears listening to smooth jazz and off I go, walking along the lakes edge on a trail around the lake. It takes about an hour and forty minutes on the rough trail but it is a nice way to get within yourself if you walk it alone. After I quit smoking, I ballooned up to a hefty 212 pounds. So, I went on a weight loss regimen of exercise and eating less and am now down to 169 pounds. It took me 2 years to do it. My local hangout, divebar is called the Tom Cat Express in Mira Mesa. It's a pretty cool place, good food, cheap drinks and mellow without riff raff looking for fights . . . .except at late nights when the zombies come out. I visit with the happy hour crowd from 4:00 - 6:30 and then visit with the zombies around 10:00PM till closing. Party hardy! School Biggest crushes - Patricia "Cookie" Rose, Patricia Nakasone, Juliette Higa Most inspirational teacher was Ruth Kanno who followed me from 7th grade all the way through 12th grade and made sure I learned English. Just couldn't get away from her but she made sure I learned. I started out at university of Hawaii Manoa but dropped out after one semester. My head wasn't in the right place at the time to make the most of education. After getting out of the Marine Corps, I got an AS degree in Criminal Justice and one in Electronics Technology. I wonder what happened to my buddies Richard Ha, Richard Nakamoto, and Edwin Medeiros. I've tried locating them to no avail. Military Enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967 for four years. I was a cryptographic technician 2817 by MOS. I spent 8 weeks TAD to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas attending a Crypto school. Within one month of returning to Pendleton, I was one of five Marines who were nominated and meritoriously promoted to Sgt E-5 by a battalion promotion board. Go figure that one out! I had only been in the Corps for 13 months when this happened. Semper Fidelis - Always Faithful Retirement I retired in 2002 after my second time being axed because of a corporate buyout. The first time was in 1991 after 16 years with a company. The company was sold and the new owners came in and cut expenses by cleaning house. The second time happened in 2002, again when the company I worked for was sold. At least my contract with them gave me a pretty good chunk of cash when the company was sold. I learned from my first experience and made sure I got a piece of the action on the sale of the company. But then I said, "I'm not going to start all over again" and retired. Life Today - Second Wind It took me two years after my separation to finally get my divorce. I tried dating at first but found it cumbersome so after about 6 tries at it, I concluded that I felt better just going out stag and meeting various people. That worked out real well for two years until I met Linda. In my eyes, she is beautiful and smart to boot. She has a law degree from USD. She is a Democrat and I am a Republican. Maybe there is truth to the saying "Opposites attract". We are sexagenarians that are as active as 18 year olds. Like magnets, we are drawn to each other. Hikes, dinners, concerts, plays, dancing, tennis, laughing, swimming together or just hanging out at the shore watching the sunset. This is the best time of my life so far and I'm loving every minute of it. To all that remember me from those good (??) ole school days, Aloha. I used to look through my yearbooks periodically over the years and bring back the nostalgia. When I heard news of someone back in Hawaii, I would break out my yearbooks to see if I remembered them. Unfortunately, I lost all of my High School Yearbooks in the Oct 2003 Cedar fires that burned my house to the ground. You know, you can replace a house but you can't replace memories that were contained in those books. I go to L&L Hawaiian everyonce in awhile and read the local papers they get from Hawaii to see what is going on back there. Check out my Facebook page under Tsunami. Update 10/22/08 Didn't make it to reunion this year although I was planning on it. My lady went to Argentina for two weeks and I just couldn't bring myself to go off to Hawaii and extend the time we were apart. Going to Puerto Vallarta in November '08 for about a week to visit a friend. Update 1/11/09 - On Thursday, 1/8/09, My lady and I hiked up Cowles Mountain, the highest point in San Diego at 1,592 feet elevation and 1.25 miles one way. It took us...Expand for more
two hours to go up and down but we made it. It was a kicker going up and treacherous coming down because of the loose, sandy soil. Linda mentioned that we were the oldest people hiking the mountain. She notices things like that. Just like when we went to the Comedy Club and she noticed that we were the oldest couple there. Well, we might be old but we are fit and active just like the young ones. Halfway up, she said, "We can turn around." I said no, because it means I'll just have to try it again sometime. Now that I have conquered Cowles Mountain, I won't have to do it again. Thank God! Next on the planning agenda. If everything falls into place, Hawaii in May 09. Trying to get the guys on a trip to Belize this year or early next year. Update 5/22/2009 - Just got back from the island of Kauai after 9 days of island fun. Linda and I had a lot of fun on the island. We kept busy the whole time we were there from going to slack key guitar concerts to plantation ditch tubing adventures. Hated to leave. Next year in May, planning a trip to Oahu or Hawaii. It's becoming an annual trek for me to go back to the Hawaiian Islands in May as a birthday treat for me. Update 2/28/2010 - Going to miss our class's 65th Birthday Party in Las Vegas this year. I booked a trip to New Zealand, finally, and will be there for 23 days beginning May 2nd. I've been thinking about this for about a year and almost went last year. Update 4/4/2010 - We had a big 7.2 earthquake today which is Easter Sunday. It was a long, rolling quake lasting about 30-45 seconds. I've been in worst shakers though. This one did very little damage. Although, the length of it got some people antsy and they rose to leave the house. For a minute, I thought it was going to be the big one! Update 5/2/2010 - Leaving San Diego for a vacation in New Zealand today. Long 12 hr 55 min flight. Will land in New Zealand at 6:25AM on Tuesday morning. There is a 19 hour time difference. Update 5/25/2010 - Just got back from 23 days in New Zealand. It is a beautiful country with lakes and rivers everywhere, long white clouds and mountains, good roads and the friendliest people you will ever come across. Great food also. I loved eating the venison. I recommend a New Zealand trip to everyone. We did two islands in 23 days which is a bit much. It would be better to see one island at a time and spend more time in each city. After we got back, layed up for a week and then it was on a road trip to Denver, Colorado for Linda's daughter's 30th birthday. Got a real hangover from drinking shots of Maker's Mark and beer backs. Don't remember about 4 hours of the evening but we must have had fun because Linda still talks to me. LOL After Denver, traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico and then on to Benson, Arizona where we visited Tombstone and Kartchner Caverns, a live cave. Made it home and still talking. All of my friends ask me if we are still together after spending so much time together. The answer is YEP! Update 8/25/10 Booked a trip to London for 7 days through a group tour with Cygnet Theater. Leaving 9/19/10. We will be attending 4 plays while in London as well as sight seeing such locales as the Windsor Castle. I opted for a pub crawl. Update 9/27/10 - The trip was lots of fun. Saw 5 different plays in London and my favorites were "Jersey Boys" and "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert". London is all about churches, architecture and history, unlike New Zealand which is acout scenery and tradition. The transportation system in London is great. Went to Stratford on the Avon to see Shakespeare's birthplace. His home, though, is a vacant lot now a few blocks away from the house he was born in.. 10/23/10 - Went to see Kanaks for Comedy put on by the Polynesian Underground. It has a lot of Island humor. It was okay. The third comic was the best. He brought back memories of what it was like in Hawaii growing up.They even had a guy doing Lomi Lomi Massages for free as a promotion for his business. He uses accupressure massage. I can do dat! Update 7/14/11 - 7/21/11 - Visited Waikoloa and Hilo this week. Spent 5 days at the Fairmont Orchid in Waikoloa and 2 days in Hilo. The Fairmont is a Primo hotel and we loved it there. The Hilton Waikoloa is like Disneyland, too big and too many keikis. Did some ATV riding on the rim in Waipio Valley which was a lot of fun. Had dinner at Monettes in Mauna Kea Resort and basically toured the area from Honokaa to South Kona and the Volcano area on the Hilo side. Had a big breakfast at Ken's Pancake House. I guess all the locals like this place because they are busy all the time. It was a very nice and fun time going home for a short stay. Aloha! Update 7/29/11 - Got a friend request on Facebook today with a message "The girl that worked Kopper Kitchen". It was a vague memory but I recalled my first wife worked Kopper Kitchen so I accepted the request. Lo and behold, it was my first wife making contact with me. We married in Oahu in 1964 and divorced in Oahu in 1966. Too young at that time. That was the last contact I had with her before shipping out for the Marine Corps. . And now, she contacts me with feelings from the past. Good feelings because I've forgotten the bad ones. A lady friend of mine said, "Teddles, you cast a spell on these women". I don't know, maybe so, or maybe it's because they knew I genuinely loved them at that time. Right, Patricia Rose?
