Teresa's Story
Life
I'm a 5th grade teacher at Giberson Elementary in Harrison School District 2 here in Colorado Springs. I wasn't sure about teaching 5th grade when I started since all of my experience was with the little kids in 1st and 2nd, but holy cow! I love 5th grade. They understand sarcasm! (Far fewer blank "huh?" looks than with 1st graders!) I loved every one of my kids this year, and I'm looking forward to the new ones I'll have in the fall. It was so amazing to watch them grow and learn! I'll be teaching 1st grade summer school this June (2008) and will get my kidlet-fix then.
I'm almost done with my Master's degree. I just have my practicum/thesis to finish and I'll be done--hopefully by the end of 2008. It'll make me a better teacher and my students will benefi...Expand for more
t...and I'll get a pay raise! It'll be worth every penny in *shudder* student loan interest I pay until I die. (I've already told Brad that our not-yet-conceived kids will need to pay for their own education by way of scholarships or lottery money because we'll still be paying off mommy's education by the time they're ready for college.)
By far the most important thing I've learned since going back to school to follow my bliss is that it's worth it to sacrifice to do what you love. Learning never ends. Going to school is not nearly as horrible as it was when we were kids because the learning now is for the good of something I love dearly--my students. Every lightbulb that goes on for a kid in class makes every sleepless night and lost weekend spent studying worth it.
