I am retired from Nursing since 2008. I keep myself busy and seems to be more so being retired than the 42 years of my working career. I have been trying to scale down on items in my home which seems to be an ongoing thing since my husband passed away in 2012. I have been doing Flea Marketing part time since 2014. Accumulating things don't help the clutter. I have been doing Genealogy off and on while working but now since retired I am working on it a lot more. I was very surprised to find out that my Paternal family by means of my great great great great grandfather William Grainger who moved from Yorkshire, England to eventually Cincinnati, Ohio had royal relatives through his wife Sar...Expand for more
ah. Her grandmother Jane Nicholson had a sister Jean Nicholson who married the 8th Earl Thomas Lyon of Glamis Castle a Royalty in Scotland. The 8th Earl and Jean had a son the 9th Earl John Lyon who married Mary Eleanor Bowes. The Lyon family has Owned owned Glamis Castle since the 12th century near Forfar Scotland. Since the marriage between the 9th Earl of Scotland and Mary E Bowes the name was eventually changed to Bowes Lyon related to inheritance agreement with the 9th Earl when he and Mary Bowes married. Hmm. Pre Nuptial agreement even back then lol. The present 19th Earl S. Bowes Lyon is part of the British Aristocracy since the 8thb Earl Thomas Lyon. We are related to Queen Elizabeth of England through marriage to the Scottish Royalty in my family. I also came across the fact that the Lyon family descended from the famous Robert De Bruce King of Scotland, I have traced the family back to the 11th century. So the the Grainger family are cousins to the Bowes and the Lyon sides of the families. The Lyon Sir name was changed in time to Bowes Lyon which it remains today. Queen Elizabeth I is the great great great great granddaughter of Mary Eleanor Bowes. So you never know who you are related to and it certainly was an exciting surprise to me and my family. I am also involved in my Maternal family roots and I have 6 ongoing families who I am researching at this time. The Lyon family has a fascinating history and the Castle is haunted. the castle offers Tours offered for a fee to see parts of Glamis Castle. Portion of it is occupied by the Bowes Lyon family. It's considered the most beautiful and well preserved Castle in Scotland near Forfar..
