Teri's Story

Life Well, I've wanted to write this forever, but just couldn't seem to get the time before now. So here goes......After graduation, I went to Pepperdine University, keeping the tradition in the family, thanks to Dad and all his years spent there. I graduated from there in 84, and spent time working as a professional photographer in the Los Angeles area, before getting into the banking/mortgage industry on a whim. (That turned into a about a 10 yr. career, by accident, lol, but it was a great decade for that industry, so I kept at it). As most of you know, I had a horse throughout school here, and that continued to be a big passion for me. Although I didn't own one during college, I had always ridden intermittenly, so a year after college, I couldn't stand it any longer and bought another horse. By 1985 I had moved up to Valencia, CA to be more rural, and hang with the crowd where I kept my horse, which was at a ranch in the shadow of Magic Mountain, down on the river. In 86, I met my husband through my horse activities, (I had 2 horses by then), and as he was from a Nebraska ranching family, our plans to always have horses was mutual. In the meantime, our horses grew by several, and we entered the Quarter horse showing and breeding business as a hobby to our regular jobs. Eventually our breed changed from Quarter horses to Paint horses, and that's been our passion ever since. In 1991 our son Justin was born, and we moved the family and horses back to Yucca Valley to get out of "the city" and be near my parents who were quite elderly by now. We have just started our 17th year back here in YV, which I had thought to never return to back in 1980, lol. I won't describe the entire 17 years, but here are some of basic highlights. We've continued with horses, even boarding for others for many years, in addition to the b...Expand for more
reeding and showing aspects. Justin is 17, and a Senior at YVHS. His passion is not horses, but music, and he plays saxophone in the Marching/Concert Band and the Jazz Band. We have had a blast for 4 yrs. doing Marching Competitions, and the band has placed very well, many 1st & Sweepstakes placing! The Band qualified for the State Finals this year, which take place tomorrow, so maybe I"ll have some good news to post in the near future. Jazz competitions were fun last year, the highlight being the weekend trip to Santa Barbara, and this is my 2nd year of being the Band Booster Treasurer, so it keeps us busy. He also plays guitar, which has prompted me into taking guitar lessons too. They have been a lot of fun for this old piano/clarinet player! Justin has a brown belt in karate, although he's not in any sport at school. The saddest note was losing my parents a few years ago. Dad passed away Thanksgiving of 2003, and mom followed on the first day of 2004. Dad was 91 and Mom almost made 95, now that's living for you! Dad was honored by Pepperdine in 2004, they put a new basketball hardwood floor in the Firestone Fieldhouse, and named it the Duck Dowell Memorial Court. We went down for the ceremony, which featured us on television that night during a game, and gave me a plaque, which you can see in the photo I have posted. It was very cool, and also happened to fall on my 20th year as an alumni. I guess that's it for now, I still love to read and listen to music, and I couldn't live without my computer, lol. We don't get many vacations, it's not easy finding horse babysitters, but occasionally there's the family trip to the midwest, Christmas or summer, and a few concerts and weekends out in the past years. Well, at least I have a bio now, and a few pics posted, and if you've read this, thanks for stopping by!! Teri
