Workplace BIOGRAPHY TERREL M. EMMONS, FAIA, F.SAME 6830 Bluecurl Circle Sp[ringfield, VA 22152 In 2011, Terrel M. Emmons, FAIA, FSAME, retired after a 40 year career with the Federal Government as an Architect and Planner. He continues to provide consulting services to national and international agencies and companies in wide-ranging facilities-related areas. His last position before retiring was as Director for Planning and Development in the Office of the Architect of the Capitol (AOC). In this capacity, and working closely with Senators, Congressmen, and their staffs, he had responsibility for long range planning, facilities asset management, facilities planning, and the annual development of facilities-related budget for the Capitol, House & Senate Office Buildings, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, US Botanic Garden, and other facilities on Capitol Hill and in the surrounding region. He additionally was responsible for all planning and design coordination with other agencies within the national Capital Region. Prior to coming to the AOC, Mr. Emmons held numerous leadership positions including Senior Executive Service (SES) positions as Special Assistant to the Director, Bureau of Land Management, and Associate Director for Professional Services with the National Park Service. In the latter position, he had responsibility for managing and directing all planning, design, construction, real estate operations, and facilities-related environmental programs throughout the National Park Service nationwide. Prior to entering the SES, he held the following positions: Chief Architect and Associate Director for Engineering with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Headquarters (1993-1999); Director of Design Support for NAVFAC (1988-1993); Director of Facilities for the Federal Judiciary (1986-1987); Chief of Facilities for the Department of Defense Overseas School System (1985-1986); Chief of Planning for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Europe ...Expand for more
Division in Frankfurt, Germany (1980-1985), and Senior Planner for NAVFAC’s Capital Area and Overseas Regions (1973-1980). In 1973, Mr. Emmons was licensed as an Architect in Virginia. In that same year he obtained his Landscape Architect’s license in Tennessee. In recognition of his many accomplishments in planning and design within the Federal Government, and in recognition of the many leadership positions he has held in industry organizations and professional societies, he was elevated to "Fellow" status in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 1998, and was made a "Fellow" in the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) in 1999. He has received numerous national awards including the AIA's "Award for Outstanding Leadership and Commitment to the Profession of Architecture," (1996); the SAME "Max Urbahn Medal" for "most eminent and notable contributions in the field of architecture," (1999), and in 2001, was awarded the AIA's "Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture" for "outstanding national contributions to the design of quality public architecture." Mr. Emmons is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences. He has been a speaker in China, The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. His expertise is in Sustainable Design, Environmental Planning, Design Excellence of Public Facilities, Facilities Asset Management, and Alternative Contracting Methods. His special focus is on planning and design in Europe, Asia, and the Pacific Rim. A native of Chicago, IL, Mr. Emmons earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1968, his MBA degree from Loyola University of Chicago in 1971, and his Master of Architecture in Urban Design degree from Catholic University, Washington, DC, in 1973. Terrel (or Terry as his friends know him) is married to the former Le Thi Nguyen of Vietnam, and resides in Fairfax County, Virginia. He has a son, daughter, and granddaughter residing in Fredericksburg, VA.
