I have led and/or been on five dinosaur fossil digs and in May, 2010 I dug up a 192# Hadrosaurus femur (dinosaur drumstick to lay folks) in West Texas. Military
I joined both the Air Force ROTC at Tulsa University; later volunteered to go to Korea with the 125th Fighter Bomber Squadron at Tulsa, Oklahoma in about 1953 (the unit later did not go as scheduled). When I joined the AFROTC the Air Force has just been made a separate branch of the armed forces. I was given brown boots (army) and a bottle of black dye to dye my boots black (air force color), so I was in just at the Air Force came into its own. I was in the 125th until 1959 when I moved to Houston and joined the 446th Troop Carrier Wing at Ellington AFB in Houston.
Later I was at Ellington again, as a movie extra making the movie "Space" with Beau Bridges and Harry Hamlin and other actors for Paramount movie studios. James Garner starred in that movie also. While in the 125th we spent two weeks in the summer at Natrona County Airport (Casper) Wyoming. I got to fly, take pictures and be switched around regularly while waiting for my commission. I took the tests three times and passed with flying colors and took the Air Force Officers Correspondence School course, making a 97% on it. Each time I was told that I had to complete my reserve time first. I would go to the trouble of proving that I did not have to do so, and start over again on the procedure. After the third time, I didn't try again, as it was obvious that I was not going to get my commission. I wound up leaving the AF Reserve as an Airman Second Class (LOL), as I allowed myself to be switched from classification to classification over several years, for the benefit of the unit, but killing my chances of moving up in rank.
My brother, Richard Proctor (Will Rogers H.S. 1953) became a Brigadier General in the U.S. Army Medical Corps however, so one of us turned out to be successful in the Military LOL.
