Terrance (Terry)'s Story

Upon graduation from Knoch HS, class of '61, I wasted a semester at Syracuse U. (too damn cold and snooty) before returning home and attending Slippery Rock U. I graduated from The Rock in 1965 with a BA in Health and Phys. Ed. but learned in my final student teaching semester that teaching wasn't for me - the kids were out of control. So, I was 22 years old, a college degree in-hand, no job prospects, and heading for trouble on some back streets of Pittsburgh. With less than clear logic but guided by unrecognized grace I enlisted in the U.S, Marine Corps the summer of '65. That impulsive action may have saved my life and through 13 weeks of Marine bootcamp I finally grew up. However, I obviously failed as a Private First Class, because within the year I was shipped off to OCS (Officers Candidate School), evidently to see if I could do better with a bar on my shoulder. That seemed to do the trick as thirty-one years later I finished my tour in the Marine Corps and retired as a Colonel in '96. Along the path of my military service, I obtained both a master's degree in physical education (exercise physiology), which the Corps never really used, and a master's degree in counseling psychology which I DID use to launch a second career worki...Expand for more
ng in the addictions field. I spent 20 years in Aiken, SC as the director of the county substance abuse agency, then 3 years as the director of the Charleston, SC county substance abuse agency. Following that I had change of pace and became involved in The United Way. Over my10 years in the United Way system I was the Senior Vice President for Community Development both in High Point, NC, and then back in Charleston, SC, where I settled and eventually retired from actively earning any income - essentially, I became a full-time ward of the federal government around 2010. Through my many decades of military and community service I meandered through many relationships, including three marriages, before the fourth Mrs. Brown (Elizabeth) and God got my attention, or more accurately it was God, through Elizabeth, that snapped me to attention. This year (2024) I will celebrate 30-years marriage to Elizabeth and prayerfully continue my active retirement in community and faith work. Based on what I can still remember it seems to have been an interesting 81-year journey to this point. If any of you happen to remember me, I would welcome your contact. I just purchased a re-print of the 1961 Lance to help me recall some of y'all. Blessings, Terry.
