Terry's Story

After High School I joined the Navy and served aboard the USS HOLLAND (AS-32). I was stationed in Orlando, Florida, Rota, Spain, Charleston, South Carolina and in Bremerton, Washington. During this period I worked as a Personnelman aboard ship as well as in the position of administrative assistant to the ship's chaplain. The chaplain happened to be Joan Baez's cousin, which made for interesting discussions and the sharing of personal family letters of the chaplain. After the Navy I attended Penn State University and received my Bachelors Degree in Individual and Family Studies. I also received my commission as an Air Force Officer at this time. While serving in Germany, I earned my Masters Degree in Counseling from Ball State University. In the military I directed Air Force Installation Social Actions programs as the Installation Chief of Social Actions. These programs comprised substance abuse education, prevention, treatment and aftercare programs. The program also encompassed the human relations and equal opportunity and treatment programs for the Air Force. In addition, installation wide staff assistance visits were conducted, (organizational management analysis) for each assigned squadron and agency. I was assigned to Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, Lajes Field, Portugal and Loring Air Force Base, Limestone, Maine. While serving in Germany, I had the unlikely opportunity to work on committee, for over a year, with General H. Norman Schwartzkoph of Desert Storm fame. A very interesting individual! He was the Transatlantic Chairperson for Scouting and I was appointed as District Commissioner for the Eifel region of Germany. I later served as a Headquarters Staff Officer at the Headquarters of the Military Airlift Command near St. Louis, MO. I also was appointed to and served on the faculty of the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois as an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies and coordinated officer commissioning and educational programs. I married my secretary during this assignment. We have been married for 32 years. We have three boys, all grown and out of the home. I separated from the military before retirement, but almost a decade later, reentered the service and participated in the Army Reserve for about seven years. I am now retired from the military. My retirement rank and pay is for the rank of Captain. I returned to live in Central Illinois for many years ...Expand for more
after separating from the military. My wife is from a small town near Champaign, Illinois. Since leaving the military I have worked in several areas to include teaching college psychology/sociology courses at the community college level.I also worked as a psychiatric and chemical dependency assessment specialist at a free standing psychiatric hospital for nearly a decade. During this period I evaluated just about every psychiatric condition. I evaluated about 10,,000 people during this period. I also worked in chemical dependency treatment at several substance abuse treatment facilities. In addition, I worked for a year as a psychotherapist at a local correctional facility. Should I say I had a captive audience? I currently hold licensures as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor LCPC), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and as a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist (LCAS), among other related certifications, etc. These licenses permit me to practice under my own authority and are recognized by insurance companies, permitting me to accept insurance payments for my services. Medical insurance pays nicely. After many a cold midwestern winter we moved to North Carolina. If things materialize, as I anticipate they will, I will begin a private practice speclializing in the treatment of addictions and other mental health related problems. This will be my next adventure. I have never worked for myself before. Building a practice will be the next challenge. It is hard to believe that it has been nearly 40 years since Scranton Tech! I've taken paths that I never could have imagined and done things that I never could have dreamed of doing. On the whole, its been a great ride, with its ups and downs, positive and negatives, along the way. I am eager to learn what life now has in store for me as I enter the retirement years. Wow----the time really went quickly. I guess if I were to provide some advice I would tell you to: Believe in yourself and never believe you don't have what it takes---regardless of what anyone tells you. Know what you want, visualize it, get enthusiastic about it and if you keep on moving in the direction of your thoughts and dreams you will make it happen! Learn from the set backs and detours along the way,use them as stepping stones to your goals, keep focused, keep faith in God and in yourself. You will achieve your desires. God Bless and best wishes to all. TERRY
